It looks like you only get the headlight detail if you purchase the entire shell, which is unavailable.

If you can remove the headlight and post photos, maybe someone can suggest a substitute that might work.

Rick, I am sure the headlight is not part of the boiler casting – it keeps falling off.  I would like to purchase more because it looks like a perfect example of the Pyle National 18” headlight which I would like to use for other engines.  Precision Scale Company has one, however it has a visor and I don’t know how filing off the visor would go.  And I don't know if it comes with a lens.

They are brass so filing is no problem. Some of the ones I use are uncored which means metal has to be removed to insert a bulb or to light number boards. You can make lenses using clear plastic.

This headlight had to be opened up for a lamp.

Neat.  I did find a couple in the Lionel parts list.  I wonder if being a toy train company, if they use the same pats for both S & O.  I also wrote to their parts help people a couple of days ago -- nothing yet.

Pete gave you the answer, PSC casts PRR headlights by the droves,....sounds like you’re beating a dead horse with Lionel,.....most of us that build custom works go straight to PSC for parts .....PSC stands for Precision Scale Parts ,....it’s kinda their game,....here’s a PRR headlight part # 40207 ,....

Hi there harmonyards,

Well, I could sort of make do and go with the Lima, don’t know if it is a PRR standard, but I’m after a Reading Company style.  The Lima is 16” while the one I have my eye on from PSC is the 18” Pyle National.  Unfortunately, it appears to only come with a visor which mans I would have to file the visor off – maybe not a big deal for some, but I have never tried so all I can say is, I don’t know, seems doable.  Also the PSC casting needs to be drilled out for the LED and one has to come up with a lens.  That all seems like a lot of unnecessary work if a ready-made one is available for $6.50 from Lionel.

Did your example come with the shelf?  the shelf doesn't show in the catalog.

Oh no, no no,...this is where the fun is!!..go down to your local harbor freight tool store and find a doming set, they’re pretty inexpensive, and worth their weight in gold for making reflectors, lenses are also easy as pie!...find some clear acrylic, measure the ID of the headlight bucket, and punch a bunch out,...making your own parts is half the fun, ....😉

Wow!  That is really cool.  However, for my level of modeling, buying a $45.00 set to make domes makes no sense if I can get one from Lionel for $6.50.

Thanks for sharing this.  What thickness acrylic did you use?

Tom,

This is probably not quite the answer you are looking for, but about two months after Lionel delivers the Legacy AF Pacifics, the headlight part should become available. A long wait, I know, but a temporary repair could tide you over until the late fall.

A friendly thought.

Bob

Thanks Bob, two months at this point is nothing if they are indeed the same.  Do you have a picture?  It's not for a repair but for an upgrade to a Flyer Atlantic.  I'm just at the collecting parts point now.

Filing/sawing off the visor will only take a couple of minutes.  Brass is easy to work with in this regard. Drilling it out is easy but will take a little while.  The hardest part is holding onto it firmly enough so that you can drill while not indenting the brass.  As for the lense, that's super easy - use Bondic.  Hold LED in place, squirt in enough Bondic to fill the space, shine the little Bondic UV light on it for 10 seconds and your done.

Now that seems doable, thanks Chuck.  I looked at the existing Berk's headlights and disappointingly, they are not the same as the Mikado.  That puts me back to brass castings and the Bondic might be my way forward.

So Tom... what did you come up with?

Hi Mark,

I ordered the Pyle National 18" with visor from PCS.  I have no real idea what I'll do though probably Chuck's suggestion of using Bondic for a lens makes sense.

I actually ordered a bunch of stuff from PCS, River Raisin, and Tomalco.  I am cobbling together detail parts to up grade a Flyer Atlantic into something resembling a Reading P-7sb Atlantic.  A P-7sb will look great pulling the AM Reading heavyweight set... if Ron ever gets around to producing it.
