Lionel New Haven TMCC H16-44 TMCC Issues

Go to Lionel Train Service Documents, On right side Document Categories check Instruction Manuals, On left side under Product Name or Number, enter 6-28813 Milwaukee Road TMCC H16-44 Diesel #406, Hit search, scroll down until you get to Diesel Locomotives, any of the three TMCC H16-44 loco manuals will work for your loco. Click the little view product icon on the right to see manual. Do a complete reset and hopefully  that will work. Also check the momentum setting.

There is no switch. Likely the magnet on the flywheeel has broken. That will cause it take off with 18 volts on the track. It may also be dragging on something causing the erratic low speed.

Pete is most likely correct, I replace magnets regularly on Odyssey equipped locomotives, it's a very common failure.  The glue holding the magnet ring lets go, the magnet ring gets cocked and unbalanced, and the centrifugal force causes it to shatter.  Typically, I pull the flywheel, glue the new magnet on, and replace the flywheel.

I should correct a couple of things from my post above. There is no reset afaik for TMCC. Also momentum is just a feature to play with later. Stall should be set after you get things working. Thank you to  gunrunnerjohn and  Norton for always taking time to share your skill and knowledge. Now I know what to do if mine ever do this. From one of your older post John I found Lionel part #610-8080-128 for TMCC magnet ring. Does this fit all TMCC engines?

Thanks everyone for your tips.  Using pg 16 of the manual to reprogram the Command reverse unit to restore features fixed the problem with going full speed all of the time and restored the lights. TMCC commands seem to work now.

The ability to change speeds is still hard to control and slow down quickly to avoid a crash is difficult so I will try the stall settings tonight.

It doesn’t move at all in conventional mode but I’m ok if I can improve the TMCC performance.

The magnet ring fits the flywheels used on Mabuchi 385 motors used in most all diesels. Scale steam uses a larger flywheel. If those break you typically replace the whole flywheel.

That's universal for Odyssey speed controlled equipped TMCC, obviously locomotives without speed control don't have the magnet ring.

Stall isn't applicable to locomotives with Odyssey speed control, so don't do that.  Try pushing the L on the bottom panel of the remote for momentum control at minimum and see if that helps with the TMCC speed control.

I hope I didn't cause too much confusion. TMCC no reset, but reprogram to restore features. I should've remembered that as I have a few TMCC engines. I just mostly do postwar. As far as the magnet ring, I wondered why I had never seen one on my engines. Only on Odyssey. Thank you John and Norton.

It should run smoothly in both command and conventional. Have you disconnected power to your TMCC or Legacy base? If not you may not get any motion in "conventional". If you have removed power from the base then you still have a problem in the engine. Might be time to remove the shell, verify the magnet is not cracked amd reseat the boards.
