When I was a kid taking a class trip to the Statue of Liberty I remember my mother saying “don’t buy anything from the gift store, they will rip you off. Buy from the street guys a lot cheaper”. Need I say more.

I guess Lionel sold engines separately to the gift shop as a favor.

I'm not local but lots of interest here, expecting a call any day for a delivery. Living in N. Carolina now. But, was a fireman at the NH&I R.R. for a time. # 40 was my 2nd love as a fireman. I was hoping that they would do 40, but.....  Spent time in 2198 & 7087. Miss all of that. Time has a way of slowing us down! I'm hoping to find a model of a consolidation similiar to 40 and dress it up before Lionel decides to make one, if they do. Merry Christmas to you and to all here on the forum. Need some "O" gaugers in the Charlotte area. Lets step up!!!

John, Steve Nelson at Mr Muffins is doing a special run of unlettered Legacy consolidations. The plan is to offer them for customization by Harry. I know nothing about #40 or if Steve’s consolidation would make a good starting block, but you might check it out.

Wow! Thank you for that tip Rider! You may have filled a gap. There is a friend, Frank Vopasek, who was engineer of 40 for a lot of years. Once in a while, our schedules were the same day, and I, or even others, worked with him as fireman. Frank has retired from that engineers chair not long ago. He and I bought the NH&I sets the same day for obvious reasons and we're both anxious to get our sets. He is the engineer operating 40, with the mustache, in the video at the beginning of this thread.

Thank You for sharing your info with me, will contact Steve tomorrow. I'm sure Frank will be excited to hear about this also!

Good stuff, John. For what it’s worth, I have the NKP Legacy consolidation from the previous run. It’s one of my favorite locomotives. Great runner and looks terrific on all sizes of curves. And a nice price point. Post pictures if it works out.

Thank you for sharing, The set seems to have turned out nice. To me the lettering on the coaches looks a little big, but that's NBD. I am happy Lionel did the NHRR at all.

I would consider an add-on baggage car or combo car, but not another coach. Attached is a photo of CNJ operations at Jim Thorpe in 1967, which inspires me. Mark

NH&I doesn't have a combine, and the baggage car they currently on passenger trains is a lightweight car and doesn't match the rest of the former Reading heavyweight roster. Maybe we can get similar cars with clerestory roofs next.

It's been ten years since I shoveled my last coal shovel full of coal at NH&IR.R. and when I left, the open coach had been completed for awhile (can't remember the # but worked on it with others to fabricate,clean, paint,etc.) It came out pretty nice. 1430 was the parlor car, it was nicely done. It had a bar, snacks, with nice tables to sit at, paddle fans and was fitted with an air conditioner. The best part of working the trains was the pretty ladies on each trip. The best events were the weddings! Great looking wedding parties and occasionally  the Brides Father was a heavy tipper.                                                                                              I believe there was a baggage coach there (not sure of it now) and was used for the Santa Clause runs. There were so many riders (mostly children), that there were 2 Santa's stashed in baggage. One worked the north end of the train and the other worked the south end. The train consisted of 7 to 9 cars (including baggage), depending on ridership of the day. 40 was facing south (towards Lahaska) and 2198 faced north on the hind end towards New Hope). Didn't have to do the run around in Lahaska or New Hope. There was a caboose frame outside the engine house ten years ago (just frame & trucks) and it may be active now, not sure. Normally 40 only pulls 3 to 4 coaches during the autumn, spring, & summer. Great little R.R. to bring the kids to for the ride! By the way, the color looks pretty good to the full size coaches. I just found out what the # of the baggage car is 1096 & open car is # 1525 shortly after the post.

Now that the sets are out, what does everyone think?  I got mine.

A couple of early impressions -

  • I am very happy with the set, I am glad it was made.
  • I am probably going to add people to the cars.  This seems to be a common upgrade for this type of coach.
  • There seems to be a large difference between the engine and the cars - vertically.  Not a big deal and nothing to do about it, just something I noticed.


I anyone going for the extra car from the NH&I gift shop?  That seems to carry a huge premium.  Will any be in Lionels next catalog?

I am going to pick mine up this coming week.  As for the coach at the gift shop. It Is really hard to pull the trigger at $225.

My plan is to keep an eye on the stock amount and wait for a sale. If the stock starts getting low, I will buy one at full price to complete the set.

What color is the additional car (1127) from the NH&I gift shop?  The photos make it look green, but they are dark.

The tan interior is an interesting one. In this video review they all seem to be green. I pick up my set tomorrow and will let you know if it’s different.

My interior is green, my wife says I am color blind but it definitely looks green. I tried getting the shell off but had no luck. I wanted to add passengers but that project is for another day. Can someone take a picture and indicated what screws need to be removed? A video would be great but I don’t want to look too un-handy.

To all the curiosity seekers of the 1430 Parlor car and it's tan color: The cars interior was a beauty inside and if memory serves me right, I believe the tan color may have been to simulate the color of the walls within the coach (the walls were an oak color, I believe). Very warm looking inside with chairs & tables to sit in & have your favorite cocktail(s). Waitresses served the drinks & snacks & dinners for the later evening train. I remember the name Grapevine Express for the wine drinkers on board, usually on a Saturday evening. My wife and I rode the train on occasion and one of the perks was riding free since I worked there part time. I've been out of there for ten years so things change over time. There was an Irishman working the bar and he was always fun to be around, great jokes too! By the way, UPS should be bringing my set tomorrow (Wednesday) from Dixie Union Station - Thanks Rocky, the set will bring some fond memories!!! One more thing, if anyone has a consolidation 3rail that they want to sell, I'd like you to get in touch by my email in profile section, please. Want one as close to NH&I's 2-8-0 as possible for a customizing job.

I just finished putting passengers in my cars. The 3 coach cars had green interiors and the Parlor Car had a burgundy interior. I emailed Dave Olson this morning asking how to disassemble the car he said only the four body screws had to be taken out to get the cars apart. I had proceeded the job before receiving his reply so I removed the steps as well which made it a lot easier getting to the 4 body screws.

    I used two 24 piece Lionel seated figures, one 12 piece MTH figures (a 8 seated 4 standing) and two 6 piece Bachman seated figures. The Lionel and MTH figures fitted perfectly. The Bachman figures seemed slightly larger than the Lionel and MTH figures so I restricted them to the restrooms and the restroom waiting seats instead of mixing them with the Lionel and MTH figures. Plus I had to cut off their legs. Sorry to say I didn’t take any pictures but I liked the results of how they turned out.

    The only negative I could think of was the set did not include any instructions for the passenger cars only the GP30 engine. I did call Lionel Customer Service and a very nice young girl emailed me a operating manual but it was for the 21” cars which used a similar type of body screws. I also emailed Dave Olson who was very helpful with a diagram of the car. I would recommend that Lionel puts that diagram into their sets that has passenger cars without figures.
