Matt,

If you are planning to operate the Lionel PRR M1a using the TMCC or Legacy command systems, please note that this is the only Lionel steam locomotive that I know of which sometimes experiences poor TMCC reception. (This probably won't be an issue if you have very strong TMCC/Legacy reception everywhere on your layout, that is, no ground plane problems).

I think I remember reading that the poor reception is due to the fact that the antenna for this loco is located in the tender coal bed instead of the usual Lionel technique of using the locomotive handrails for the antenna.

Whether that's correct or not, I owned two of the M1a locos, and I loved them but had to add an external antenna to remedy the reception issue.

If, however, you are running in conventional mode or just planning to display the engine, the reception problem won't be an issue.

Hope you find one. These are beautiful models!

Will, the antenna on this engine is the two hand rails on both sides of the locomotive. Not in the tender. If you had an issue perhaps the handrails were damaged, grounded to the shell or the wires connecting them to the R2LC board inside the engine were loose. I've had this engine for years, ran it at various venues and also on my home layout and never had an issue. It is a great engine, great sound from the fatboy speakers and a good smoker.
