I recently purchase a Lionel 6464-650 Rio Grande Box Car, received it from Stout Auction I participated in last year.  It came with it's Original Box upon receiving the item and inspecting the box I noticed the sticker that displayed it's number 6464-650 was starting to peel off. I peeled it away a little more and saw the box number was really 6464-900, and on one flap the number was 6464-930 which is the box for the New York Central box car.

Is this common with the Lionel 6464 box cars where stickers are replaced for different cars? Has anyone else had the same kind of issue?

Thanks for your help.

I've seen plenty of rolling stock with stickers such as the one you removed. While I do not know for certain where they came from, they could be factory, so I just leave them.

The 6464-900 was available between 1960 and 1966.
The 6464-650 was available in 1966 with plastic trucks.

So Lionel could have used left over 6464-900 boxes on a plastic trucked 6464-650.
What does your car have?

Question:

Didn't Stout show a picture of the box with the paper label?
