I've been studying Lionel prewar tenders trying to determine the differences.  Can someone tell me the difference between the 265w and 2225W, or 265T or 2225T.  I've just spent a while on eBay looking at photos of both and I can't spot the difference.  Anyone know what is the difference.

Are we looking here at identical tenders for which the number depended on which locomotive came with it ?

A tough one to keep straight.  The shells are identical plus or minus the hole for the whistle. Either black or Gunmetal, whistle or non whistle. The telltale difference is the coupler height  I seem to recall..... 2225 was low coupler, 265 (and 2265) were high coupler. I dont think this was 100% reliable though and a simple truck change could make a 265 low coupler and vice versa.... and there are a few sets that Lionel broke the rule right from the factory.
