I’ve often wanted to add a PT tender to one of my Hudson’s and when NL Trainworks had the tender shell on clearance, it was time.

A parts order into Lionel for the frame, sideframes and front truck only sweetened the deal, as it all came to under $200, with shipping. This includes the 40” wheels from US Hobbies. (See other posts). 

So I cobbled it all together quickly to get a glimpse of what it’s going to look like, and without tightening the shell down to the frame (you’ll see the ~0.020” gap), we’re sitting at a respectable 179.5” from rail head to the top of the expansion chamber.  Prototype is drawn at 177.5” (14’ 9 1/2”).

Here’s a comparison between the oversized Lionel stock “flat tread” wheels and the US Hobbies 40” wheels.

The wheel swap for the lead truck was easy, as it’s just a pin and screw in each side, so loosening the screw allowing the pin to pop free gave me the access to drop in the wheels.

As for the 5 rigidly mounted axles, it was a little harder, but putting them all in on one side and standing the frame on edge allowed them to sit vertically and made it easy to insert the other side.  I put the screws in just slightly so I could have them started and just tighten them down when they were all in.

The last one fits a little loose, and I’m going to try and modify the sideframes with slotted holes so I can bring them in a little more so there’s less play.

there are some modifications that need to be made, as the sideframes have brake shoes cast at all locations, but the prototype had them missing after the 2nd axle and before the 3rd, for the water scoop.

My guess, Pete, is that it shouldn’t be affected because the brass bearing inserts on the end axles are machined closer to the sideframes and all of the stock wheels are already flanged.

Now, there are some other things I need to contend with, such as the side letting being too high. 

Convention was for the lettering in line with the cab numbers, so the PTs on the Niagaras had the New York Central higher up on the tender side, and the Hudson’s had it lower.

So some Hudson’s had tenders off Niagaras, as they were taken out of service or damaged, and some had PTs added as the tenders were built. The Lionel tenders have thelettering in the high location, which is correct for my tender, as it’s numbered for a Niagara, but I plan on mating it to a K-Line 5344, which records show had a new PT tender made for it, and should be in the lower position. 

HW, thanks for the info and I had forgot about that, and as a nod, there’s a mention of the front overflow elbow in the above.  Another fun fact is that some had adaptors on them for fire hoses for filling, with spigot valves.

If you have the decals, relettering is easy on this. Lacquer thinner will have the old lettering off in a couple of minutes with no harm to the paint. I just did my 4th Lionel engine this way yesterday, a Mogul from 2003-4. 

If you don't have the decals yet, many of the Diesel sets will work as they are all gothic font like the Niagaras.

MTH scale wheeled Hudson with the PT tender?

I wanted it but never came up with the cash. I looked and missed out on the 2 rail Mohawks as well. Someday when I get my bills in order I will start buying more engines again.

Joe, I have the hi rail version of this. 5330 came out at the same time. MTH Hudsons haven't changed much since the first PS2 came out around 2000. The latest ones have cab curtains and engine decks thanks to the wireless drawbar.

5274 is from mid 2000s. The tether on this was straightened and curtains and deck added.

They all run great. Some details are a little off but only a hard core NYC person would notice.

BTW there is a hi rail one in your town that might be for sale. Contact the Z man if interested.

You can see MTH got the lettering right, in line with the cab number. 

#5274 did indeed have a PT tender (PT-1; see below).

And to add to your thoughts, lots of 5200-series Hudsons had PT tenders applied, but not 5278. Personally, it wouldn’t bother me, I’d still use it. Don’t forget to add 40” wheels!
