I also purchased the set. I agree with OP, set runs great. Fantastic cars in the set. Yes, the engine is a shade lighter in red but not pink. Here's some photos:

Maybe you can help me out.  The Black Hopper car 65414 in this set had a rattling sound in it when I opened the set and the coal insert on top was sunk down into the car further than I though it should be. So I tool the coal insert off and there were a bunch of broken plastic pieces in the bottom. I think have figured out what they were as it appears there are support notches in the inside of the hopper car that might hold 3 straight cross bars that support the coal insert and keep it raised to the slightly above the top of the car. If this is the case I will need to ask for replacement parts for these as all of them were broken when I unpacked the set. If anyone would help me out with a picture of what that is supposed to look like with coal insert removed  it would greatly appreciated. If you might know the part number that also would be most helpful.

Just my opinion and I do not mean to cause any problems on this forum, but I purchased this set from a LHS and was extremely disappointed in the quality of the set. The engine window sun shades were attached in a crooked manner (not straight) and the horn was bent to the point that paint was missing. The coal car has a hand rail that also was not attached correctly. If I am going to spend the dollars for a premium set as they state, then it should be of the highest quality in workmanship. I took the engine back to my LHS and received a replacement which is better. I apologize to all the Lionel fans, but I am done with Lionel. Presently, I own 162 Lionel products and being a senior citizen will not purchase anymore products due to the frustration with quality and workmanship and the aggravation in returning to get a replacement. Bye, bye Lionel

Hi Art,

CNJ (ex B&O) SD40 3067 was the only SD40 painted in the red/white 'liberty' 'Coast Guard' scheme

This unit was known as the Red Baron

The unit became Conrail 6291, then went to a lease fleet and actually ended as a UP unit

Plus Lionel already made the exact same model of the red 3067 back around 2000, but IMO the red looked better. That diesel wore that paint scheme for.... 5 to 7 years as a guess, and Lionel has to make a model of it twice? I guess it sells.

I just got the 3 hopper set (Blue Coal).  Same thing.  Loose pieces and handrail issues.  They are not necessarily broken.  They might have originally been glued in.  The sides of the hopper are bowed out so the support pieces don't stay in.  The top piece goes in the middle (I broke that one trying to put it back).  They are delicate. I have one car that seems ok so I am not going to try and remove the coal load since they don't come out without prying.

What a shame, Brendan.  Sorry to hear this.  Seems like one story after the next (similar to yours) is getting reported here.  It absolutely doesn't have to be this way.

I need some help. I have gotten the new SD40 Red Baron engine to run in all three modes however I cant get it to smoke now . Smoke switch is on . It was smoking initially but reading the manual it it said to prime the smoke unit with 10 to 20 drops of smoke fluid which I did (about 12 drops of Lionel Premium Smoke). Since then.....nothing. If the engine is in a cool area like a basement does that affect its ability of the engine to smoke? Its about 59 degrees in my basemant.  Also my legacy cab 2 remote displays "CAB 1 MODE" for this engine/  Why is that? The key pad on the Cab 2 remote is all numbers no icons. Should it not be icons?  I have a Vision gg1 on the other track and it smokes and the Cab 2 remote displays icons when its running. I have only a basic knowledge of Legacy as I have found it somewhat confusing at times. Can someone help me out with this?

whistlebell1. I have found lionel smoke units to be problematic. I have found that sometimes 20 drops is not enough and added more. Maybe the batting has already burned which will not smoke well. Make sure you blow puffs of air down into the smoke unit. You might have an air lock which will cause no or very minimal smoke. 59 degree temperature should not have an effect. I gave up dealing with the smoke units and turned them off. As far as the cab 1 and cab 2 I too am relatively new to the system and do not want to give you wrong information.

Question regarding CAB 1 mode, select the engines ID and hit the info button on the top right of the controller.  Use the red dial to scroll over to the the box that says control.  Once there you can select legacy mode instead of cab 1.

Thanks! Did what you suggested and it worked! Once I changed to Legacy Mode the numbers changed to icons, speed bar now at the top etc. That problem is solved. Many thanks for you help. Now I have to try and determine why no smoke is coming out. I added 12 drops to prime as suggested (its a new engine (Red Baron SD-40) that did smoke for a bit but stopped) I would think 12 drops should be enough.  Also blew into it but nothing .  I have had it happen with other engines that they dont smoke and then after some time they start to smoke. Maybe if there is too much in there it will need to evaporate. The area by the smoke unit is pretty warm so I think it is working.  Thanks again for you help. Members in this forum seem to be able to solve just about any problem.

I have had snoke issues before on other engines . Sometimes the problem resolve themselves. I think if you overfill it takes a while for the unit to start working again. Maybe the fluid needs to burn off or evaporate. In the mean time at least the engine is running great!! Thanks again for your help.
