I have a Lionel Santa FE 57' Mechanical Reefer road number 57020 that I can not find any info on. I believe I bought it on eBay years ago, it came in a Lionel box with item number 6-17764 on the box. I know it is the wrong box because that box is for car number 56244. Have searched for info on the 57020 car but cannot find any. Was this car part of a set and if so what was the item number? Any info would be helpful.

Thanks,

Ed Kempf

You have the right box for the right car.  56244 on the box label represents the road number that the car was originally supposed to have when it was cataloged.  After the car was cataloged, the road number was changed before production started.  The car was made with road number 57020.  The box labels weren't updated before they were printed.

Why did you send me info on car no. 56244, I am asking about car no. 57020.  57020 is the car that I have and I would like to get some info on. I also have 6-27294 car no. 3006.

If you posted a picture it would be much easier.

Sorry but have already packed it away so no photo is available. If you look at  Lionel's web site it is exactly like 6-17764 (car no. 56244), but has car no. 57020.

Based on what you have posted, were there no cars produced with road number 56244. Tranz has 6-17764 posted on eBay with the picture for 56244, so that is kind of misleading.

What you may have is one out of a Lionel two-pack or three-pack. On SOME freight cars, Lionel released a single car, then released a two-pack in the same catalog, or a three-pack of the same type in a later catalog. This was done with the PS-4 trailer flat cars, and more recently with the 86-foot Excess height cars.

By the way, does anyone know if the Lionel cars have Kadee mounts?

That is correct, there are no cars produced with road number 56244.  The image you are referring to is a computer generated image for use in the Lionel catalog, not a picture of an actual production item.  Note, the computer generated image also shows a black roof whereas the production piece has a silver piece.

This car was NOT issued in a multi-pack.
