Lionel SC-2 Unit Power Options

According to the manual, the wall wart power is only used when operating accessories with the SC2.  Follow the instructions for wiring switches ... the SC2 will get its power from the SW-1 terminals.

I use 15 vac accessory power from a lionel transformer. I also connect the U terminal (the outside rail connection on the layout) to the U terminal on the SC-2. Before I did that the control with the CAB 2 was very iffy. Now with the U terminals of the track and the SC-2 connected together, the control is solid especially for route switching (where several switches are actuated with one command).  

Also I do not use position #1. I did the U connection circuit board trace cutting, but the behavior of the #1 position was still problematic. So I don't use that position, just use the other 5.

Once I cut the trace, all six of the locations work fine for me, I've done it to a number of SC-2's.

Well with Fastrack, #1 did work, but if I leaned on the remote controller, the switch chattered. It was functioning but I never could get rid of that anomaly.

I have five of my SC-2s wired as directed for switches, these power a total of 32 switches. The switches all work fine including doing the routes. The two SC-2s that are connected to accessories receive power at the track power connection . I did place a ground plane wire in the area of the SC-2s and I am also using the signal booster by Dale and John.

If you’re running command or Legacy use the track y to o power the SC2.  Works great. 

Using the wall-wart provided, as SC-2 power.  Isolation on the 6th set of terminals.  "cut the trace"

Putting a ground wire over the SC-2s is a good idea especially when they are under the layout. The SC-2s are just like engines.

Ok, it’s down to a simple question of power from the transformer to the SC-2 unit or through the wires leading to/from the switch motor.  I have a feeling if I wire it wrong, I’ll be blowing some pricey $$ SC-2 units or the switch motors.

So which will work better, Plan A or plan B?  Any thoughts?

 I am not sure if this will help, I used this information in the link, from Ed Goldin's website, to connect my switches, but mine are all Gilbert American Flyer switches. I see no one else has chimed in here and this may bring you some replies from people more familiar with the switch motors you are using. I do not know how good the control buttons are that you have on your diagrams, what I do know is that I took all my buttons out of my circuits, they occasionally stuck in the powered position and did toast one of my relays, I now activate all my switches from my Legacy remote only.
