Presently, I own a 1990 LTI scale Hudson and the new Vision Line Legacy black Hudson #5344.

What are your favorites and why?


Love the features on the new VL Hudson. But after watching the TM video on its construction I prize the effort from the lost art of Lionel American train manufacturing as much as the engine itself.
That alone puts this engine above all else..
It will always be my favorite..

I'm with Skip!!!!!! LIONEL PLEASE MAKE A LEGACY J3A, preferably a remake of the one offered in the 50th anniversary hudson set,with the boxpok drivers, and maybe the choice of, or pair with a pt tender, the one from the CCII offerings might work nicely.

Hoping Lionel will produce a Scale 5344 with the detail of my K-line Hudson’s in Legacy or Vision line. I also hope they make a Dreyfuss and a Empire State in Legacy or Vision line soon.

I have but one: the 6-18002, cab number 785 Gray Hudson from 1987. It's my favorite because it's mine! It was also the first hudson in a very long time (since the original?) to have spoked drivers--adds a lot to the appearance.

Since he is not on the forum, I'll speak for my Dad, too. He has a 1-700E which I get to run often. Beautiful piece. And the traditionalist in me approves of its open-frame motor and e-unit.
IMO the Scale 5344 Hudson was the most realistic product that the company ever made. The prices of excellent examples of this 1939 pieces run into the thousands of dollars. It was also a product designed to run on scale T-rail track as the driver wheel flanges were also true to scale. It had no smoke, no whistle and was pretty barebones by todays standards. It would be a waste for me to wn such a fine engine knowing that I won't run it. Its a prize collectors piece and a shelf queen.
The 1990 Hudsons fill the operating needs of my layout very nicely. American made,strong runners, good sounds and simplistic conventional operation. This is an authentic Lionel Hudson in my mind.
1990 LTI version here, made in the USA Smile. Bought to replace a Williams 773 that very unusually(for Williams)decided to die.
Our 1-700e get's plenty of run time even with all the newer command contol engines. I'll have to look for a set of Lionel scale maddison cars. I run it with Williams cars at the moment and they look a bit small.

Real shame there are no real NYC Hudsons left. Maybe you guys should
build a "new" one like we did over here with A1 pacific "Tornado".

Funny thing I've noticed throughout all these Hudson threads that pop up every now and then, I've never heard anyone talk about or show a photo of that super rare last American made Hudson in 2001.

Last time I counted, I had more Dreyfuss Hudsons than the New York Central had! Smile but, I would still add a Legacy Dreyfuss to my roster.

I am very happy with my VL J1e Hudson, and would really like to see a repeat of the J3a Hudson from the 50th Anniversary Set, but this time either VL or at least with Legacy.

I have a 1964 773 Hudson with New York Central tender. The engine has open spoke drive wheels that were installed at Madison Hardware, instead of the closed spoke drive wheels the engine came with.

I won the engine in the Metropolitan Train Collector's raffle (METCA) in February 2011. The raffle ticket was $25. Not bad for such a small investment. The engine was rated as a C-8 with an exception. The exception are the open spoke drive wheels.

I recently had an LED headlight installed in it. The light is so much better now.
