Unfortunately, it is one of the oldest that I've done and doesn't have a lot of details. Also, it hasn't been revised for a smaller, more realistic Kadee box opening. Even more unfortunate, is that since I lost all of my files and CAD drawings and measurement details, I am unable to redraw or modify them. I also sent the locomotive back to the owner.

To (possibly) complicate things a bit further, the SD38's include Lionel's newly-designed kinematic pilot, so there's a chance that the coupler opening is a different size than the older SD40-2 that you previously worked on. Here's a front-end shot of my Reading & Northern SD38 with the new pilot...
My guess is that the opening is narrower, but if you have a set of calipers, measure the opening (Height & Width), and I can tell you if this or another one is the same size.
The Kadee is gonna have to stick waaaay out there to clear the plow if you are going to MU them. If just a single engine, it will still have to stick out quite a ways. 746 for sure.
What about the Lionel GPS 30 or the GP35? As for the plow. If the pilot has the steps you can remove them reposition the plow, drill new holes in the plows mount then trim off the excess.

From the looks with the exception of the SD40-2 the pilots are already trimed back to fix the pilots. All you need to do is to remove that top piece and the fabrication a spacer.There is a possibility that the spacer for the dash 2 will work on the SD40. To give you an ideas about work around. I used an Atlas GP-35 mount for the Atlas SD40.
We all need you, Mario!! Yes, the Lionel scale coupler mounting kit solves the issue of installing the Kadees, but really does nothing for filling in the still-rather-large opening in the pilot like your coupler pockets do!
No offense whatsoever meant to Rich B's conversion job...those BN units look great with scale Kadees instead of the big claw. But IMO they would look even better if those pilot holes were completely filled in!

It's probably going to need this one... you'll have to trim the bottom tab off, but it should fit. Measure it and I'll tell you...
