Re: Lionel SD70ACe (2016, Volume 2 Catalog)

Hello Everyone,

So for a while now, I have had something on my mind that has kinda intriguing me. My guess is this has already been brought up before but, I couldn't find any posts talking about this so, I thought might as well just start a new one. Anyways, so as many of you probably have seen by now, in the 2016 Volume 2 Catalog, Lionel announced a run of BTO SD70ACe's but there is something about them that still bothers me. These new BTO SD70ACe's are stated to be 19' Inches Long. Now why does this bother me? It's because every other SD70ACe released by Lionel in the past are 17 1/2' Inches Long.

Does anyone know the reason why Lionel has done this? I didn't see anything anywhere that stated this was New Tooling. Perhaps this was a typo?

The prototype is 74'3" over the couplers. In O scale that would be 18.56".

I would guess that the new version will be the same as previously produced pieces - the 2014 version is very detailed and tooling is very expensive.

I just measured my MTH SD70ACe. It measures about 18.5 inches coupler to coupler. Are you sure the original Lionel model was 17 1/2 inches long or are you going by the catalog descriptions?

Jim R. gives us a clue. Is the measurement from couplers end-to-end or just the length of the chassis?

My thinking...................the tooling is the same from 2014 to 2016. Why? because Lionel would be advising all new tool in the 2016 catalog! In addition as you all know.............tooling is expensive!

I was going by Catalog Descriptions, I don't own any Lionel SD70ACe's currently, so I couldn't do my own measuring.

I went and emailed Lionel about this. According to them, it will be the same tooling as all previous SD70ACe's.
