Lionel Set #247W info needed

So far set # 247W is not listed in Greenberg's price guide. Are you 100% sure it is set # 247W? Seems to be missing a number.

Any way the 224E steam engine was used in a few different sets, so having a 224E won't identify the set very easy. What else is in the set? Like what numbers on the passenger or freight cars? What else may have come in the set, like any track or switches? That can help identify a set better then just the engine number and year.

I have a pre war 224E that came with a passenger set of 3 cars.

LIONEL 247W TRAIN SET

225E loco, 2235W tender, 2656 cattle car, some light oxi spots on roof, 2653 hopper, 3651 log dump, 2657 caboose, obs except cattle, missing 2 ends, some tape & wear, osb worn, C5-8.

Sorry I took so long to reply, I didn't get the notices.  Anyway, Lee it is without doubt a 247W set with all boxes.  ACE, the Liveauctioneers is one of the comparables I had found showing the 225E.  The set box is neatly filled with the following all in their individual boxes.  224E, 2224W tender, 2652 gondola, 3651 lumber car with logs and bin, 2654 tank, 2657 caboose, RCS, 167 whistle control, a small Lionel box with no number on it showing the contents as Lock-on, Lubricant, Connecting ties.  There is also  UTC connector in there but it is not in a box.  Everything in there fits perfectly and there is still room for either a transformer or tracks.  I bought this back in the 1990's and only just got around to looking at it.  I purchased it from the sister of an individual that recently passed away, she told me he purchased it new and it was the only train set he had bringing it out only at Christmas time.  She did not know at that time where the transformer or track was.  Anyway I would like to know if this came with a transformer and/or tracks and if there was a set 247W with a 224E instead of a 225E.  Thanks Nick.

Looked this up in the Greenberg book of prewar sets, and this is what they have listed:

Outfit No, 247W (1940); O gauge; $23.95

Contents: 225 locomotive; 2235W tender; 2653 hopper; 3651 automatic lumber car; 2656 stock car; 2657 caboose; 160 unloading bin; eight curved track; three straight track; R.C.S. track set; 167 controller.

Comments: All observed examples of this set came with a black locomotive and tender. The 2653 hopper and 3651 lumber car are black with white lettering. The 2656 stock car is burnt orange with a Tuscan roof and white lettering. The caboose is red with a Tuscan roof and white lettering. The hopper and stock car are some of the scarcer cars in this series and add value to the set.

But remember, back in the day, retailers were switching out components to make a sale, or putting various stock inside any box for a customer to walk away with. If you have more detail, or photos, your mystery set could be solved. I didn't find any sets with your exact combination, but it could be that a retailer through in an extra car to fill a box.

Correction, there does seem to be a catalogued set that matches the inventory you gave. It would be a set No. 143W, 1939-1940. This would have the 224 loco and 2224W die cast tender in either black (1940) or gunmetal (1939), the latter which is a very desirable L&T.

Like I said, photos would help to confirm details which would date the pieces and set.

You must have the more detailed or larger version of the Greenberg's price guide. I have the pocket size edition, 2014, and no mention of the 137W or 143W set is in it.
