Due to my budget I'm torn between the GS-1 Pilot OR the GS-4 Freight Set. I cannot do both....but of course I like both.... so I'm still trying to decide which to order. What to do? What to do?

Get the GS-1 Pilot. It is a unique model and probably will not be made again whereas the more common GS versions are bount to be rerun in a couple of years. You can always buy the cars that are in the set at some point.

I appreciate your suggestion. I guess I was looking at what's the most bang for my buck, but you make a very good point that I can always complete the set at a later time while getting a very unique piece. I think that's the route I will take, thanks.

Originally being from Schenectady, I decided to bite the bullet and order the B&M passenger set as I don't have any e-units in the collection and the length of the consist is "right" for my 9' X 14' layout. The 18" passenger cars should be a good fit for my 0-90 curves.

Nice set, great value. Hope to see more sets like this in future catalogs.

I need to buy a vowel?

Doesn't the freight set (I assume you mean the GS-4 set with all the SP cars on pages 32-33) also say it's BTO?

Considering every one of the cars is an operating car of some sort (and 2 of them being Vision cars - which are normally sold in 3 packs, if offered at all), I would not think the odds of those cars becoming available for separate sale so as to "build a set" yourself later would be easy to do.

(or are you counting on some dealers breaking up sets at some point?)

I'm missing something in the logic that suggests it would be easy to pick up these cars later vs. anything else that is BTO.

I just wish they'd cease and desist creating plain Lion Chief engines, and make them all either + or 2.0.   This includes RTR sets.

Absolutely agree with this. I’d like to buy the Strasburg set, but its just plain LC. Why? LC+ & 2.0 is so much better. Same with the Conrail GP38, which I’ll probably get because CONRAIL.

The smoking reefer car is cool!

I think you're right, Dave. First, there won't be all that many of these sets made. Second, it's a set, and that's what people will be buying it for, and it's unlikely anyone buying the set will have any intention to split off the cars. Actually, I'd think it would be easier to find the GS-1 pilot later, than the cars from the set.

The only real possibility for someone wanting the cars is that Lionel may offer somewhat similar ones at a later time for separate sale, but the actual cars from the set would be extremely hard to come by, IMO. However, even if similar cars were offered in the future, it's highly unlikely they would have the special features these set cars do.

Some thoughts:

  1. Will both the GS-1 and GS-4 Vision Stock Express Set actually be built?
  2. If I were to buy the GS-1 it would be one of the two Southern Pacific GS-1's with the brass Class 160 C-4 tenders. (I'd opt for more brass) I am not that interested in pilot locomotives, but I do like that their details are much more apparent.
  3. I would guess many more GS-1's would be built than Vision Stock Express Sets. If you were a collector, I would think, the Vision Stock Express Set would be the best "investment" (not that I believe model trains are a good investment.)
  4. One aspect of my O-gauge modeling is I find locomotives and cabooses that meet my criteria. Then I seek freight to build my consists. My consists change as my railroad dictates (my whims).
  5. I prefer unshrouded steam locomotives, so the GS-1 has me interested.

So my original thought was basically trying to decide between the Pilot OR Freight set. I do not think “building the set later” would be easy or even 100% possible. However, I already have the SP PFE Vision Reefers from a past catalog and maybe I’ll just pick up one of the the Visión stock cars they offer in this catalog to simply get close to the set. I’m not looking to be prototypically exact. I guess I see the GS-1 Pilot as a more unique piece as I don’t think it has been offered before and certainly not as a VL engine with hybrid brass and who knows if it will come back anytime soon? And you’re right, maybe the freight has more value as a collector/investment purchase but for me personally I keep going back to that page and staring at the Pilot...but you all definitely make some great points and it’s certainly not an easy decision 😅

What do I like....WAY TOO MUCH!!!!!

If I were to order everything I like it would cost me $10,000 +.  So I have to make big cuts to my list

That is usually how most of us go. Start with a big list, cut down to what you like, what you really like, to what you need and can afford. I remember when they had the weathered Y6B a few years back. I liked the Y6B, but I didn't like it weathered. That cut down what I was going to spend by quite a bit, and made some other decisions that much easier.

While I do like the designs of the GS locomotives, they're just not that important to me, that made things easy for me. Also, the FM's are nice, but I could do without those as well. So, I went for a few things here and there since I had more options than what I thought I would have.

YES!  I've posted this comment on most of the recent "Dave & Ryan" webcasts, but they make no comment on it.  Putting plain LC in sets like Star Trek, Budweiser, Scooby Doo, Hot Wheels, etc., is cutting out the adults to whom those sets are targeted.

Getting a GS5 4459 with dynamo smoke, daylight 18" sets b,c, station sounds diner car, baggage car, aux tender -- should make for a nice "set".

Also getting the Vision reefers (white MDT) and stock car (white w/red stripe CP) sets.

-Still thinking about the slope back B6 steam switcher and the Conrail "almost reality" T1 steamer.  Then again, I don't have a Trainmaster nor a E8 set in my fleet (Penn looks nice).

-Need to definitely get the BNSF and SP beer cars. Any truth to the rumor i just started that Lionel's gonna put an operating beer tap on each?

The original Lion Chief Plus has been replaced with Lion Chief 2.0, if Lion Chief Plus was going to go in the sets it would be the 2.0 version that does not come with a dedicated remote. If they took that route would they still be considered ready to run starter sets? MTH already took that route and people on the forum complained at the time.
