Hello, I visiting from the tinplate section of the forums.

I recently won a Lionel 8600 in a raffle and when I first got it, the smoke unit was very weak, but I noticed that in the past few days it has been getting a lot stronger but the heating element is glowing almost white hot. Now, there doesn't seem to be a short anywhere, and the plastic cap that goes over the unit isn't melted but there is a bit of a burning smell (might just be the smoke fluid though) so my question is... is it supposed to glow like this?

I removed the lamp to take this picture just to show how bright it is in there. when I shut the train off you can see the element slowly go from white, to red, orange, then back to black. But when I took the loco apart no damage was found, and my controller isn't showing an overload. This is my first postwar style locomotive so I apologize if this is a stupid question
