Per my recommendation my neighbors picked up a second hand starter set #31940 New York Central Flyer. I've oiled and greased the engine, oiled the axles, cleaned the track and the sound is in and out. I know that's typically a sign of dirty track but I just cleaned it. Going to clean the pick up rollers on the tender now. Anything I'm overlooking?? Thanks!

Open the tender up and check to see if there is a dead 9 volt battery or no battery at all. Some of those units had battery backup and some didn’t.  While the tender shell is off check for loose wires or a bad solder joint.

Popper the tender open, no 9 volt or a place to install one. Reset all the wire connections, then started tapping on things and when I hit the pot for volume it would cut out and get even more static. I'll re-solder those three wires in the AM and report back. TY.
