David,

You may also need a TMCC serial data cable (6-14192) or a generic equivalent, either homemade or purchased from a computer store or site.  It connects the TPC to your command base so that it can receive the TMCC commands that it will be responding to.

Have  you've been using a classic Powermaster PM-1 (6-12867) up until now?

Certainly.

1.) First the 6-12194.  This is used to connect your power source to the TPC.  6-12194 comes with all four items pictured.  You'll only need the middle harness.  You'll use both connectors (and two 135 W max power sources) if you have a TPC 400, or only one of them (and one 135 W max power source) if you have the TPC 300 (6-14189).  Another option for the TPC 400 is to use only one connector with a 180 W max power source.

The wire ends are connected to the appropriate screw terminals on the TPC (see, (2) below).

2.) This diagram is from the user's manual for the TPC 300 (71-4189-250, 4/04):

You can see that the 6-14192 cable is used in addition to the 6-12194.  Be careful.  You'll notice that the Lionel part numbers for the two cables are remarkably similar.

By the way, if you use a LEGACY Powermaster (180, which is No. 6-37146, or 360, which is No. 6-82883) instead of a TPC you won't need the 6-14192 Serial Cable because the serial TMCC data is received by the LEGACY Powermaster via radio instead of through wires.  The LEGACY Powermaster 180 is a more modern version of the TPC 300, and the LEGACY Powermaster 360 is a more modern version of the TPC 400.

Thanks Mike for your answer.

SteveH I use a Lionel Type Z 250 watt transformer.

Are you talking about the post war ZW 250Watt?  If so, I was under the impression the only special cable you'd need is the 6-14192 to connect to the TMCC or Legacy base.  I'm under the impression that the other cables are for connecting to a Powerhouse transformer with the 2 or 3 pin female molex power output.

@David S posted:

It is not a ZW. The front plate on it says Type Z 250 watt. No handles on the sides but 4 knobs on the tilted front.

Ok, gotcha.  So it has electrical binding posts on the back, yes?

If so, and I'm understanding the connections correctly, no special adapters would be needed to connect Z 250 out to TPC in.  If I'm right, I'm sure @Mellow Hudson Mike would have caught that if you'd mentioned the transformer.  I just had an notion from something else that was said in another post that you might not be using a Powerhouse and wanted to say something before you order something you might not need.

At any rate, I'm hoping someone else will verify your connections to the TPC.

Good point.  For TPC's the 6-12194 is NOT needed when fed by traditional transformers, like your Z,  It's only for PowerHouses, 135 and 180.  For these traditional transformers two connections will be made, so two independent wires will be needed.  Each of these wires connect to a binding post on the transformer; the other end of them to a screw terminal on the TPC.

If you're using a LEGACY Powermaster instead of a TPC the 6-12194 may still apply.  Unfortunately there are no user's manuals for these to be found online, so I can't tell if they have binding posts like a transformer, or screw terminals like the TPC, or Molex-style connectors like a Powerhouse (and as found on the 6-12194).

If they do use connectors then you'll use one of the harnesses seen on either end in this picture of 6-12194, instead of the middle harness, to go between the transformer and the LEGACY Powermaster.

Good advice Steve. That did the trick.

For some reason the LEGACY PowerMaster user's manuals aren't accessible through the search engine on lionelsupport.com, but they are stored on the site.  Google easily found the 360's manual, although it was quite far down the search results list.

Here are the links, thanks to Google:

1.) LEGACY PowerMaster (6-37146)

https://www.lionelsupport.com/...EGACYPowerMaster.pdf

2.) LEGACY PowerMaster 360 (6-82883)

Thanks again,

Mike
