Lionel transparent NS boxcar?

Is this car worth picking up?  What's the special features of it ?

What I thought was cool, is that I remember back in the day, the Southern Railway had such a car at their Tech Center in Alexandria, VA. We used it for evaluating Load Configurations and Securement of lading. The clear sides allowed Engineers to see what happened to lading when the car was impacted in the yard. That's what the dial was for on the side of the car to show the speed the car was travelling. This was common before radar became a more accepted standard for testing.

 

When I saw this car at my Local Hobby Shop, I grabbed it right away. Brought back many memories from when I started my railroad career.

Greenrail-  is this a "rare" car to find?  Worth picking up?  Also is it scale?  Besides it lighting up are there any other features

One of the national clubs also did the car, I think it was the TTOS. Its been done a few times.

Don't guess it's too rare, going for around  $75  on the bay.

After seeing this thread yesterday, I picked one up at my LHS this morning.  Nice car.  I like the lighted interior lights.  The load appears not to be movable; even though, the description says it is.  It is not to scale.  It is 0-27.  I found a new one on Dash for a Buy Now, but decided to buy it at my LHS since they had it in stock and would cost me almost the same with shipping costs with Dash. 

 

 

Kjstrains, thanks for sharing the pictures, I like cars that are different and based on real life rolling stock. I have not seen that car before, and it looks like it would fit well with the one 027 line that I pull with my 4-6-2 Reading steamer. Enjoy your new car, and glad you got it from your LHS.

They have been out since 2008, they are nice & different. I have the first that they released which was the Santa Fe. The Alaskan is also nice which has husky dogs in it as part of the load.

 

Would this car not look right with a scale train?  How much did you pay for it?

I think everyone has their own opinion if a non-scale car looks ok with scale cars.  For me I am not that picky because on a real railroad you will see a mixture of sized cars.   I will be running this car with non-scale and scale rolling stock.  In picture below, this car is in between a RailKing NS boxcar and a MTH Premier Southern boxcar.  The RailKing is non scale where as the Premier is scale.  The car is little bit smaller in height compared to my RailKing car but the length is about the same.  I paid MSRP at LHS for it which is about $74 plus tax.  I saw it on Dash website yesterday for about $75 which includes the added shipping cost.  I paid a few dollars more at my LHS because of the tax.   Regardless, it is a nice car and I am glad I purchased it.

Yeah - it would be great to have a string of barking boxcars.  Or better yet howling at the moon...

Here is pictures of the TTOS Damage Control Boxcar that was released for the 2006 Sacramento convention. I believe the TTOS version kicked off the series.
