I see now that Lionel will be producing scale lenght U.P. Excursion cars. My two questions are.....are scale wheels available from any sources that match the axle diameter of the Lionel trucks? Also, on the sound cars...will they only function properly on AC current? If so, does anyone make a simple inverter circuit to create 60hz while maintaining the same voltage (as opposed to step-up inverters)? Or would it simply be more practical to just scrap the electronics?

This is a guess:
I believe it is simpler than that. First, most tinplate axles are quite skinny - you simply drill the sideframes with a #41 drill and insert NWSL wheelsets. It looks better if you also bring the sideframes inboard, but that is usually not necessary.
Most solid state electronics circuits work on DC, so toy train power first hits a rectifier. This is pretty much true of the locomotives as well - all use DC, so the track power hits a rectifier, and a reversing switch of some kind.
I have no idea why Lionel et.al. Are still using AC on the track. Much cheaper to use only one recrifier at the transformer.

Because of a million AC transformers still in service. Why do people still use Windows XP?
Ooo - I know that one. Because it is a zillion times easier to use than Windows 10.
Any update on Lionel full size UP excursion sets?
Don't hold your breath, seem to remember late '17 or early '18, perhaps somebody will update after York this week.
Yep, this question was on my mind as well. Anytime after January works for me. My big ticket train purchases revolve around tax refunds......��
