Edit 8/2014:

Welcome to O Gauge Union Pacific.  I collect O scale Union Pacific engines and rolling stock. 3 rail and 2 rail.

I know there's a lot of other great UP stuff out there........ I'd like to see what you have...I'm sure some other's who follow this post would as well.  So let's see those pics!

Original post:

I'm in between layouts right now.  Which means lots of stuff in boxes and no fun.  Until I have more time I'm reduced to taking out an item or few to look at then putting them back.  Looking forward to Spring and a little extra free-time.  Meanwhile just some picks in case any other UP fans are longing......

I love UP steam. I own mostly that.  From time to time I'll pull them out of the boxes and stare at them.  Day dream of when I can watch my Big Boys/Challengers pull all my reefers or watch my H7 pull coal cars.  Or how about an FEF pulling scale cars around wide radius curves?

Anyway, I really enjoyed the pictures!

Well if you're buying Atlas O track I probably just beat you to Robert's sale of 40" Straights on the for sale forum.

I've thought about the new Legacy H7 why don't you post some pictures here. I'd like to see some close up.

I can't tell you how the H7 looks.  I bought it a month ago and haven't had time to get it out of the box.

I think that observation is one of the funniest things about this hobby. I did exactly the same thing when I picked up the big boy last year.  I have yet to run it or the 4-12-2 either.  We get all excited...can't wait for the next catalog....when will my LHS have it???.....always looking for this old model or that...etc...you'd think we couldn't wait to tear it open right away..and yet somehow we don't.

It really makes me wonder just how many people on this forum have done the same thing and how many paid big bucks for basements/crawlspaces full of incredibly high priced un-opened boxes.  All the strategic thinking months or years ahead on acquisition and planning of layouts,... finding the time, ...wondering...am I ever really going to get this done???

Anyways.....Anybody else have some nice Lionel Union Pacific pics they want to share??

Lionel UP FEF #844 (Grey scheme).

If Lionel would just re-release this FEF in two-tone gray with the UP Aluminum (silver/white) stripes with different FEF-2 or FEF-3 cab numbers and some matching heavyweights.  I wouldn't be able to resist!

You should just call Scott and make him an offer on the Boneyard one. You never know.  It is a 10 year old model. If he does give you a break just don't ever tell, especially on this forum. You'd put him in a **** of a spot with the rest of us wolves.

Even at retail price there's an opportunity cost to think of.  3rd rail doesn't reissue engines the same way Lionel and MTH do. The model you want is not coming up for resale anywhere. A site like BrassTrains might charge an even larger premium. Sometimes satisfaction is not about the lowest price but more about getting exactly what you desire.

By the way...still waiting on pics from David1.

Any other Lionel UP fans with photos?

The H7 looks great.  I've been on the fence and figured I'd pass but now I might be re-considering, just waiting to see what's in the catalog before I consider my next acquisitions.

Otherwise...No worries, don't apologize..keep on posting.  I enjoy seeing good photos of what I don't have but might like.

The thread is called Lionel Union Pacific

It's in the Photo Album forum so posting pictures is kind of the point.

Besides..I think were the only two people paying attention to it anyway.

Oh, and for the pre-requisite picture, here's an older one of the Fast Freight Set Jr. Berkshire "Santa" brought for my son a two Christmas' ago.   Doesn't satisfy the prototypical modeller in me but the kid in me enjoys it almost as much as my son does.

Ok guys I need some advice, I have most of the Lionel scale steam engines in Union pacific.

I have a WP legacy EM1 that I am thinking of changing the tender to Union Pacific. The cab number will stay the same.

What do you guys think? I know the UP never had a EM1 but then again neither did the WP but the engine runs so great has great sounds And has whistle smoke.

Need your thoughts?

I hate to sound surprised but the Y-3 looks much better than I expected.  I guess the catalogs never do justice to any model.  That really is a nice looking locomotive!  You'd think that being a slightly smaller articulated steamer they could have made it handle a tighter diameter track.

In other news I finally got my hands on a black FEF-3 Lionel 6-11131.  Here's a couple quick pics.....

The prototype Veranda Turbine did not have a fixed pilot. The gap needs to be closed to today's standards but it needs to swing just like the prototype.

Ahhhh.....Finally arrived!  Scale Union Pacific 4-8-2. Two Tone Grey with Silver/White stripes.  Legacy Railsounds, fatboy speakers, awesome chuffing/synchronized smoke, whistle steam, LED lights, O-54 capable, $1099.99. (side note: BLI makes a pretty nice MT-73).

Nice Looking cars and Cabeese! Did those 15" Aluminum Passenger cars come like that or were they modified to add detailed interiors??

On the sharing side.....

You've probably seen this pic already, Atlas O 8359B, as I've posted it on the "Buy anything cool lately" topic.  Atlas makes some nicely detailed refer cars.  This is modeled after one of the two all aluminum UP/SP PFE refers.

Atlas O 8359B

Another car I would like to share is one that most scale modelers/runners might not take a second look at:

MTH 30-7915 Union Pacific Searchlight Car

Obviously not prototypical. More than a few years old too. More of a homage to O-27, but it's bigger almost scale in size for a depressed flat car.  The six wheel trucks add a lot of weight..it's heavier than you think it would be.  Both trucks have power pickups.

I like the color scheme..while it's clearly just for fun, it doesn't seem completely toy-like and actually looks pretty good in a consist behind scale UP steamers.

(unless of course you're going for the realism of modelling 3:47 pm May 15th 1958 at Sherman Hill..etc...etc..)

But it is something different to catch your eye.

Add to the massive size 4 motors per locomotive and you can move some serious tonnage across a pike.  I can't wait to watch these monsters pulling long trains.

I have the #80 Coal Turbine as well. I use it to pull my beer reefer train. You are right about the 4 motors. This is a pulling beast. While I do plan a PS3 upgrade, PS1 is good enough to pull cars. FWIW, I tossed all of the traction tires in one loop around the layout the first time I ran it.

The Union Pacific type locomotive is a unique locomotive to add to any collection. For those of us in love with big UP steam, it doesn't get any better than a 4-12-2 rigid frame locomotive!  It was the largest non-articulated engine on the UP line.

I like the old livery.  Not the era I am going to model but real trains didn't have 3 rails either!

Atlas O just announced more Steam Era Classics - Rebuilt Wood Refers in the PFE/Overland Shield Scheme.  Might look pretty nice behind your 4-12-2 or Y-3...

Whenever I order Atlas O cars I usually order all four numbers.  $80 bucks a pop is steep, but I know I'll have a heck of a time finding them later if I don't.  Plus the shipping container makes it easier to store them.

The overhang isn't as bad as the last photo makes it look.  Keep in mind this is 0-138! Since I have a few articulates, I've decided to compromise the straight runs on my new layout design in favor of broader curves.

The articulates look much better on the curves than the 4-12-2s.

I wish I had the room for O-138!  The biggest I can support now is Atlas Track O-90 with O-81 on the non-visible backside.

You wouldn't happen to have any O-90 that you can take the same aerial shot and front end shot from with the big boy?  I would really appreciate a posted picture if you do.

As packed up as I am It will be a while before I get the JLC out again to see for myself.

Thanks but it's not worth the effort.  I'll get around to it.  I just figured if you had it handy.  There's been plenty of previous "overhang" threads with enough info for me.

Put the order in w/my LHS in the 2 road numbers for the recent UP/PFE Atlas-O rebuilt wood refers.

Still on the fence about the MTH Shay. Jerry has it displayed and it's staring at me every time I walk into his shop.

Remember even the Union Pacific had to restrict the big boy to certain areas because of the overhang. They also moved some tracks around curves at a few places where they ran.

i found the best curve to use on my layout is at least O88 but the wider the better. my widest curve is O96 and it runs and looks great doing it.

These are the only two Weaver Models cars that I have.  Ultra Line.  Nice car decent price. You can get it in a cleaning car version but I only bought two regular road numbers.

I only have one road number for the MTH and Lionel offerings, Two of the Weaver.  As stated earlier I try to order all available road numbers 2 or 4 car sets from Atlas.  Otherwise trying to find 4 different numbers from older releases is a real pain in the arse.

Ok maybe I'm feeling a little bit Passenger too.

MTH 20-68116 STREAMLINED RPO

It's a nice car but a newer release than my 5 car passenger set and sleeper/diner 2 car set.  The trucks are nicer than those older cars and the diaphragms are too.  The ends are grey while on the earlier sets the Yellow wraps around.  I kind of prefer the wrap around look.  I honestly haven't researched which is prototypical but then again these are kind of generic cars anyway....

MTH 20-97282 34' COMPOSITE HOPPER CAR W/COAL LOAD

Mike does a good job with detail on this one.  Heavier than you'd expect too.  You can remove the coal load which is a nice feature because like most coal loads the detail is....meh.  The discharge chutes open nicely and the interior of the hopper has nice detail.

It also comes in a 6-car set. The previously posted Composite Gondola and the soon to be posted Flat Car with Sherman also come in 6-car sets.  I just don't have room for a train that long so I only have one of each.

Well I have to get back to being somewhat productive....so one final offering for the day.....

I hate to sound like a broken record but I love this car too.  Then again would anyone really spend the kind of money we do on a car they don't love?  Nice heavy flatcar with decent details...the Sherman tank is wonderful.  Be careful with all the additional detailed pieces. I forgot to take the mounted "Ma Duce" off of the turret once before putting it away and snapped off the machine gun mount. (I'll get around to fixing it.)

As stated earlier this also comes in two separate 6-car sets.  Military train types could make an awesome train with these!

Interesting side note.  Mike's must have made a deal with HobbyMasters for the tanks. Don't know if they still make them or not but they offered the identical Huston Kid along with many other very cool 1:48 military pieces.  I've purchased another tank from them separately that my LHS had in stock... a slightly different version Sherman with soldiers and pieces. Pics of that included too.....

It was fun for me to pull the stuff out.  There only seems to be 5 or 6 of us who like to post on this thread....I know other forum members have great stuff we'd like to see!

I think you and Aaron should move to the NE. We then could combine our UP equipment and model the entire UP system. What a layout that would be.

Actually, Dave, you should move to the Midwest, Witz and I are fairly close! Just lacking you! I've often thought the same about combining all of our UP equipment and building a huge layout.  We'd need at least a 50X100 Ft building!

One thing is for sure, the engine facility would be incredible!  We could even have a full circle roundhouse-confident we could fill it with UP Steamers. Between the 3 of us, the only thing we're missing is a 2-8-0-Don't remember any of us posting one...

Dave, I have to agree with Aaron.  The Bloomington/Normal IL area sounds like a great place to start up a Rail Club.  Plenty of places in Normal we could rent reasonably with enough members and Bloomington has a quality local hobby shop too!  Besides western roads might feel a bit out of place in New England.

Are you trying to collect every challenger the UP had? I hope so,lol.

That's funny!  Rest assured, I'll run out of money before that happens!

As much as I love the ready to run locomotives and rolling stock, my heart lays with wanting to scratch build brass, never made in O Scale, UP items.  As of now, I have 5 steamers on the list and haven't found time to start any of them.  Two different 2-8-8-0 Bull Moose, two different 2-10-2s, and a TTG/Black 4-8-2 MT.  There's always something I want to build, right now I'm working on an FEF-1 with a Pittman can motor, ERR, and a fan smoke unit.

I've really enjoyed working with the UPHS during my research process.  Bob is a great guy.   The books they produce are well written and in simple terms anyone can understand.  A great resource at a reasonable price.

Can't wait to see what you build....

Things are looking UP!  Good luck with the new camera, you don't have to be a technology champ...sometimes its better to be the CHALLENGER.  Besides your comments were so well ARTICULATED.  Also, posting photos of O Gauge Union Pacific is so much more fun than trying to come up with terrible word-play.

David,

Those are fun! and tighter diameter curves too.

That kind of set would be perfect for an around the room shelf layout.

A foot below the ceiling and just above the door/window line would give you a big continuous loop to enjoy a nice long passenger consist like that. Add a tight turning diesel and you would have enough color to catch your eye but it would be distanced enough that you wouldn't mind the simple detail.

Better get crackin' on that construction!

Guys it's been awhile since somebody posted on this thread.

I have been putting together the Union pacific city of Los Angelos train. Here is some pictures  of what I have so far. All the cars are from K-line

The baggage and RPO ARE 60'  and the rest of the train are 72' which is prototypical for the city of Los angelos.

Still looking for a few more of the dome coaches.

Arron,

I still own the original Williams UP City of San Fran Passenger Train, she still runs smooth as silk and she is one of my favorite passenger trains.  She is one big Williams Train and in order to run her I must mix slightly smaller pasenger cars in with the big UP, the original Williams UP was engineered to run on 054 when running the complete train.  Running her from the DCS Hand Held Remote Control via the TR Z4k mode, she runs even smoother than straight conventional, simply an awesome old Williams original.

I won't be surprised to see the FEF with whistle steam in the future-or a vision line offering, but who knows?  Honestly, I hope it isn't in Vol II because the budget was tough last year on UP steam!

Great video!  Love the FEFs!

Thanks for the comment!  It really is incredible, I was shocked by both the incredible sounds as well as the size of the locomotive!  It's a great addition to my UP fleet!

Hahah, I hear ya on the VL offering...that would be both amazing and awful on my wallet!!

Not sure why it's rotated but you get the point.

These are great books.  I wish I could find some at a reasonable price.  I'd probably buy the whole series if I could.  However, everytime I come across them online it seems like they want a fortune for them.  Clearly they are popular for a reason.

FEF-1s had unique tenders compared to the later FEF-2/3's centipede tender. There is a lot of work in these photos-about 40 hrs.  It's all brass and detail parts/trucks come from PSC.  I quickly threw some old decals on it because I was so excited.  I've removed them since this picture and have installed new.  Here's a teaser:

IMG_6604

Those tenders really add to the unique look of the FEF-1. When it is finished it should fit right in next to your 3rd Rail early Challengers.

I'm sure you are aware of and already use steamlocomotive.com as a resource.

here's a few links from that site to FEF-1 photos:

Another great resource I visit frequently is the Denver Public Library photo file. There are two search fields.  Be sure to use the "Search Photographs" field. I enter the locomotive I'm looking for ("Union Pacific 4-6-2, 4-8-2, 2-10-2" etc.). It will pull up tons of photos of that type and photos are listed by the year it was taken. It is really helpful for researching modifications and livery schemes by period.  I keep this link as a desktop icon because I use it the most:

I did a little research several years ago.  I was surprised when I found the photo because outside of 2906 and 7002 I didn't think the UP streamlined.

Discussions on this forum were interesting but after I emailed out to the guys at Utahrails.net they did a little research and got back to me.  The semi-streamlining was briefly mentioned in a book or two I guess that the UP shop did it themselves after seeing what the SP was doing but found in testing it had no effect on the smoke draft towards the cab. The wind wings on the other hand were much more successful.

And also, thanks for the books link.  I've been to the UP site but never thought to look for the books there.  Silly oversight.

Will.

Though I looked at it the other night, today I was able to really use some of the different functions.  It's a great resource (just as you said!).  I really like being able to search by years.  I've never saw most of the photos and saved a lot of them.

If anyone has photos of an FEF-1 cab interior or cab area, let me know.

Again, thanks for the excellent link.  I'll be using it in the future.

Yes.  I especially like the fact that they are digitally saved as super high quality photos that allow for zooming in for close-up detail.  The library did a great job.  I'm always careful, though, to provide either a direct link to the photos or else give proper credit to the library and photographer's collection for rights sake.  Somebody worked quite thoughtfully on those.

Even though I'm usually searching for locomotives in the rest of the picture there's usually a good representation of passenger, freight, or mixed consists of the period.

Also since were talking about a photo album I don't feel bad adding another post without attaching a photo of my own.   So here's an old one of my previous layout.  UP Fast Freight set Berkshire Jr. and Lionmaster 6-11200 in the foreground.

Happy Weekend fellow UP fanatics!!

Wanted to share two videos with you guys.  The first is just some good old running action courtesy of my UP fleet!  The second is for any Vision Line Big Boy owner that has experienced poor performance with the unit's blow-down effect.   A good friend of mine, Bill Yates put out a great four-part series in which he went through various trouble-shooting techniques in an effort to improve the smoke unit's performance.  Thought it would be worthwhile to share!

Hope you guys enjoy!!

In other news, I bought 2 future project locomotives today.

I spent most of the night carefully installing/checking my ERR install into the FEF. I'm electrically challenged.  I'm proud of myself-it works! Now need to permanently solder/heat shrink the connections.

Basically, I built the tender as an oil burner.  Then plans changed to coal.  When removing the oil "deck," I got it too hot and the whole front of the tender fell apart. That was quickly followed by nasty words my wife doesn't like to hear....and 3 hrs of soldering.

Since I had to solder the whole front back together, I took advantage of the situation.  Drilled holes for the ERR speaker as seen here.

IMG_6762

Below:  Drilled a hole for the tether to pass through.  While at the hardware store, I grabbed the plastic grommet, which the tether wires will pass through into the tender/ERR board.  The grommet will prevent wire chafing.  It presses into the hole.  The masking tape are labels so I can keep everything straight...

IMG_6769

Below, grommet piece soldered into tender.

IMG_6772

Below: Coal load rough shaped in foam.  Will be painted black and 'coal' glued to it.  ERR TMCC antenna will mount to foam.

IMG_6764

Below:  New problem-foam falls through tender opening.

IMG_6773

Below:  I soldered in brass pieces to form a ledge for the foam to sit on.

IMG_6775

Below, underside view.  No laughing at my soldering skills, I'm getting better but it's harder than it looks!  Especially when things are hard to reach and I don't have a 3rd hand!

IMG_6776

My original plan was to put the smoke and run/PGM switch in the water hatches.  They were to big.  So, I came up with this:

IMG_6778

The finished switches are hidden by the coal load and easily accessible:

IMG_6777

As if my first ERR install wasn't intimidating enough, it was complicated by 2 rail trucks, and adding a common to the frame.  But, it works well now!

IMG_6755

Still have to solve a few puzzles to have smoke.  Need to make a bracket and decide how I'm going to connect the unit to the stack...I'm missing something, not sure what.  But, I can't do anything until a smoke stack arrives.  Should be here this week.

I can't begin to describe the amount of time it takes to do some of this stuff.  I'm sure I'll be faster on the next one.

No work on the FEF tomorrow, I'll be at Indy 500 qualifying... I hope to get the sound installed this week.

After a major set back, it's starting to come together and I'm excited. I can't wait for the PSC parts to arrive so I can get back to work on the boiler.

More to come!

Heard rumors the VL reefers may be here soon.

Looks great bud!  Very impressive work.

Wow, that's a hard one to find.  Congrats.

I never thought when these were introduced they'd command the prices we see now.  Seems everybody 'had' to get one recently.  And, why not?  It's a popular UP model, unique construction and the Scout lover's found their collectability undeniable.

As Will said, it's a great feeling to finally add an item you've wanted for a while.  Again, congrats on your new purchase and enjoy it.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks bud!  Yup hard to find and super expensive, but it's a piece I've really wanted, so in my eyes, worth the $$.  As I lamented to Will, I just wish I had the foresight to purchase these when they first came out....talk about price appreciation huh?? lol

My personal take is the BSA will probably go down as even more desirable than the GEVO demonstrator....there is one on the bay now for north of 2K....crazy!

Glad you enjoyed the video!

Did someone say "Union Pacific?"  Just found this thread tonight, really glad I have.

I know what I have is all 3 rail, and have some from Lionel, MTH, Weaver, 3rd Rail, Atlas, etc.  Not showing all... Madison and streamline pass sets, Lionel Postwar, K Line E8s, etc.  The Big Boy is an MTH from 1999, but I have upgraded to TMCC/RS from ERR, and glad I did!  Also, the FEF from Weaver came with QSI, but now I have installed ERR systems TMCC/RS.

Great new pics gentlemen.  Erik, absolutely beautiful cars!  I also know at least one other person that thinks that FEF-1 is as great as I do.  Bob, Nice FEF-3.  Texas, great UP collection.  What's that other stuff?  I do like the Lionel 622.  I have my Dad's 623 in perfect shape.

Keep em coming....

WITZ 41,

You have gotten me thinking about my Weaver FEF and other than the ERR upgrades,

making other cosmetic improvements.  Please send me, and for others, the addy for

PSC as I am not up-to-snuff on all the suppliers.  I just recently retired from being out-of-state all the time and playing catch up with my layout.  Yes, always liked the Lionel PW 622, and 6220, and the 4 623s I have.  All total, I have over 200 pcs motive power, pretty much split 50/50 between postwar and modern.  The effort to have ALL my collection out of boxes is the problem I now face.  Have shelves on the wall, but that impedes my room for expansion onto around the wall track right-of-way.  Never enough room, is there?  Seeing the pics of the H7 have really got me to thinking....a dangerous thing...LOL!!!

God bless those we remember on this date and those protecting us still.... abroad and here at home, from all threats, foreign and domestic.

Yes, it was the pics you posted of the H7 that wet my whistle.  And the upgrades to the Weaver FEF have me thinking about the one I have, detailing and upgrades to the exterior/cab.  Really like the UP Y3.  My Lionel St Fe Y3 #1795 is an excellent runner and has no problem pulling the 21" K Line CZ 12 car consist, or, I have also pulled my 18" MTH UP streamline 13 car consist on the grades pictured of my layout.  I am waiting to do any landscaping/scenic until I have run all my engines, pulling the longest cars I have in long consists and certain all trackage is final.  The Century Club II Niagara has given me the most fits running, but have gotten the bugs out of it and adjusted track as needed.  Really like the changes to the FEF and awaiting the final results. Let me know what you acquire from PSC, please, as I may wish to upgrade mine.

Like Ahab chasing the White Whale I've searched for this model for years only to catch glimpses or discovering that I just missed it for sale.

I've got it!  In my hands...its mine.  Now I just have to wait......

I can not describe how excited I am.  the Pacific is pristine. Its a brand new model, untouched. I did a quick inspection but I don't want to take it out if the original packing. I'll keep it this way to ship for painting when I get my  GGD Harrimans.

I am totally stoked that according to the manufacturer letter there's a Boxpok driver set included for late-life appearance. It will be installed.

I'm going to use a GGD Harriman coach for paint match, to TTG w/white-silver. Also add lights and sound. Based on research most likely OWR&N #3219 or #3222 UP Train No. 39 The Kansan.

Naturally if 3rd rail comes out with a matching Pacific or Mountain first I may just have to buy the newer Locomotive.

Here are some representative pictures for your imagination....

(Well hopefully by sometime next year)

Sorry I'll have to edit this post later. Posting photos from a smart phone is exceedingly frustrating.

Nice looking Pacific you've got there Aaron! Interesting about the boiler front. I guess there's always an untold story. Especially with a thirty year old model!

You know you're going to paint it. Just a matter of time. I'm currently trying to figure out the best way to add lighting and sound.

The Mikado? The steps were easy enough with gentle pressure the "cow catcher" not so much. I resisted the urge to increase pressure so I had it rest on the bartop with the pilot over-hanging. Facing it head on I lifted the front end with my thumbs on the front and fingers behind. I didn't push too hard but instead let gravity slowly do the work. A couple of pauses for alignment check and I was happy not to have snapped the **** thing off.

Did yours come with the box and extra boxpok driver set?

Anyway. I think possibly your being a little shy. I'm guessing you might have another photo or two to share on this forum that some others may have already seen on the other side.......

Given the views on this thread there's got to be some more UP fans with some photos to share...maybe something we haven't seen yet??? Can't be just PRR fans posting in the photo album forum lately!

Here's a picture of the new upcoming Union Pacific MT-73 4-8-2 Mountain w/12-wheel Vandy tender from 3rd Rail. Oil fired in two-tone gray with white/silver striping. Next to it on the other set of tracks is the coal fired version in standard black.....

No guilt. I meticulously peeled back the tape and methodically unrapped the locomotive so I could do do everything in reverse order to wrap it up and put back in the box. Which is what I did, stickers and all. Good practice for when I ship it for painting...

I'm glad I looked. It's perfect, shiny, and new!

It's been a while since I've pulled out the CA-3. Lionel really did a nice job with this model. On/off smoke and light switches, great detail, and it's beautiful.

My only gripe is the "Made by Lionel" on each side, but think I can live with it since you'll notice a center rail and lobster claws long before you can really see it.

If the CA-4's are just as nice then either model is a must have for any Big Boy owner.

It's a New Year,

I thought I would give a little update on some of the research and choices I've made on my little project....My version of UP Train No. 39 "The Kansan"

Most photo evidence I can find is of the Westboundroute. (No. 39 Westbound Kansas City to Salina. No. 40 Eastbound Salina to Kansas City.)

Ogaugerr Forum has been a huge help. Plus I've reviewed many other sources including websites, library photo files, magazines, books like the great UPHS offered Prototype Locomotive Photos series, even found post cards that were helpful.

I've decided for my newly acquired OMI/AJIN Pacific, that after narrowing it down between #3219 and #3222, I'm going to go with painting it as #3222.

While I like the look of the BoxPok center drivers on #3219. It spent most of it's time in Oregon/Idaho.

#3222 Spent most of 1949 to 1954 in Kansas until it's removal from service. Two tone Grey photo research has it's spoked wheels as late as 1953.

1.The Kansan. Union Pacific Prototype Locomotive Photos Vol 18 pg 73

2.The Kansan UNION-PACIFIC-RAILROAD-Real-Photo-RPPC-Postcard-Locomotive

The BoxPok wheel set apparently were not installed on #3222 until at least 1954 after repainting back to Black Livery. (Charles Winter photo)

4. The Kansan owr3222

Many photos have it with number boards for No. 39 (The Kansan).

This makes for a nice documented consist according to Utahrails.com:

http://utahrails.net/pass/cons...950.php#num39-kansan

Train No. 39, Kansan
Mail Baggage Express    Kansas City to Salina
Storage Mail                    Kansas City to Salina
Snack Car                         Kansas City to Salina
Coach                               Kansas City to Salina
Coach                               Kansas City to Salina
Coach                              Kansas City to Salina
Storage Mail                   Kansas City to Topeka.
                                        (returns dead head on 370-70)

I'll be taking some liberties since I've ordered the 6 car set plus two additional coaches.

So my "No.39 Kansan" will be running:

Mail
Baggage
Snack/Lunch
Coach
Coach
Coach
Coach
Business Obs

The site also lists a roster for the Harriman arch roof heavyweights:

http://utahrails.net/pass/harriman-numbers.php

(I know many of you are already familiar with the site, I just like to document my sources)

Now I haven't emailed Scott and I have no idea what he's considering for Harriman car numbers but I'm curious what he's researched vs. this list.  While #3222 was OWR&N, I have no Idea what numbered cars were actually on the real Kansan in 1948-1953 UP, OWR&N, or otherwise.  Still researching this.....

I figured if they're at least accurately numbered to the car type I will live with the "idea" that they were "shared".  This way they'll also work when I model them for other parts of the UP system. That is if I ever get my hands on a proper 4-8-2 which I would plan to number for an Oil Burning Union Pacific #7021, #7023, #7024, or #7865 to #7869, ( the likely winners UP#7023  or maybe LA&SL #7860 since I have a photo of that particular 4-8-2 with number boards for The Kansan Train No. 39 as well.).

I'll be spending a small fortune on this model, but I'm aiming for the UP No.39 Kansan. 1948-1953 time frame.

Union Pacific 4-6-2

I'm pretty sure I've decided on the Painter/Installer. I'll have them install the newest LokSound DCC and lights. Paint will be TTG w/White Silver striping #3222 with " 39  " on the number boards. I'm shipping it with one of the GGD cars once they're available in order to get a perfect paint match for the consist.  I'm also sending all my research and photos, along with copious notes, and instructions for what I expect.

Which means this project is pretty much shelved until we hear more from Scott Mann on the GGD cars.

Who knows. Maybe he's secretly manufacturing a proper 4-8-2....we can dream anyway...

Until then I'll continue searching for models and researching for accuracy.

If you're reading this why aren't you posting some photos of your UP?  There's got to be some beautiful stuff out there we haven't seen on this thread yet.....Shays?....Modern Diesels?....MOW?....2R/3R?  Let's see them!

A,

I love this one!  (Just great, Thanks a lot.  Now I'm going to have to start looking for one of these too.)

Awesome. It would look great behind any of your Pre-1940 freight.  The UP began painting all their locomotives from Red to Yellow in the bottom half of 1947.  I'm still partial to the red ones. If you can't find a place for it I'm certain I can help you out with it.

Great to see the progress on your 3-rail FEF-1 project.  More pics!
