Page 20 describes the reset procedure.
With the engine in program mode. Apply power
Push ENG, #ID, set. ENG, #ID, AUX 1, 2. Remove power and slide switch back to RUN. Wait 10 seconds and try it again.
You can only reset the roof beacon with the cab 2 orange module. You cannot manually reset it.

Chuck I have the module but nothing to adapt it to, again i have the trainmaster command set 6-12969, cab1,
You'll have to go to a friends house or hobbyshop that has a cab 2 to do this for you.
The orange module does not program the engine. It has nothing to do with this. The only thing the orange module does is configure the Cab2 for that engine.
The module configures the cab two to toggle the roof beacon on/off. When it is back on, it will stay on in cab one mode.
Well that would be a new one on me. Not sure I ever heard of an engine needing the module to operate correctly with a Cab 1. Seems odd that Lionel would design it this way.
Let us know what you find but if you do the reset outlined above, it has to be done quickly.
The UP GP7 is a heavily accessorized engine. The normal 8/9 commands for a beacon are used for the smoke.
I’ll take your word for it but this will be a first for me.
I picked up an older TMCC GP-9 today. Strobe worked when first on track. I noticed later its not working. Did a search and found this thread. I only have a Base 1-L attached to a TIU. Does this mean there is no way for me to fix this in my configuration?
Standard TMCC GP9's use the normal code for the roof beacon. Aux 1 then 8/9. I would guess being older TMCC, it has no smoke.
I only have a MTH DCS remote (and their app). But, your hint about smoke sort of got me to the answer: pressing smoke on/off on the MTH remote turns the strobe on/off instead. Thanks!
Not sure if this will help any future issues. Old stuff from 2006
Thanks everyone!
