I believe these were made in 1983 for JC Penneys. I think some were made in Mexico and some in the US. Does anyone know how to tell where a unit was made? Does anyone have any addtional background/info on these? I will be looking for a new one, with the case, at York in October.

From what I heard, it was the way the decal was applied below the cab window, not sure, but I think the USA ones had the flag with the mast at an angle and the Mexico ones had the flag mounted vertical...

Here is a narrative on PW and MPC era FM units.
This implies that all the Wabash units were made in Mexico.

The train-station link is helpful. Contrary to prior "common knowledge" that says the US version is more rare, I have never seen a Mexican one. I was beginning to doubt that *any* were ever made south of the border. I've owned 2 of them and have seen about 4 others, plus several on Ebay, and all were made in USA. Thanks to Train Station for the enlightening photos!
All, thank you. I think I may have found a made in USA version. Seller is checking for the "made in USA" on the fuel tank. Regarding the flag placement, the flag mast (flagpole) on the Made in USA is at an angle, which makes the flag bottom parallel with the frame?
Well, this is interesting enough that I dug out my Wabash FM, as I was curious to see which version I own. Having read the links above, I think a third variation is possible. Check the attached photos. I'm the original owner, and nothing has been tampered with.
The first shot is an overall shot. The second is a closeup of the cab. Note the slanted position of the flag staff, which is indicative of USA production. Now look at the third shot, which is the bottom of the fuel tank. Note the stuck on label, which covers the MAde in USA cast in the tank. The label indicates /Mexican production.
My theory is this frame was produced late in the Mexican run, as production was shutting down. The unfinished engine was returned to the US, where a USA made shell was installed. The engine was shipped to me in June of 1984.

I have both variations...the sad truth of the matter is that these appear often at Auction Houses...netting a paltry $350 on average after commanding 2 to 3 times that back in the 80's!!! More importantly, the BLUEBIRD is one of the nicest looking Diesels ever produced!!! The Mexican models often have burnt armatures, black truck overspray on the lower sides of shell, and other defects. Close inspection is warranted.
I have my "made in USA" mint Wabash FM with case. Thank you to everyone for your illuminating comments, photos, and web links. They were very helpful.I purchased this from Carol Yott, the person in the OGR Forum who is helping her Mom sell her Father's train collection. This is indeed the most attractive FM I own. Lionel did a great job on this one. Also, opening the box gave me a rush of "Michigan Air" . I think Carol may have one left if anyone is looking for one.
