When the LIRR museum opens in the Spring I would like to make a first time visit by taking the train from NY Penn Station. I see on their website that there are two locations. Which site is better for a first time visitor... Riverhead or Greenpoint?

Riverhead.....the Lionel showroom layout is there.

Never been to the Greenport location so I dont know what's there.

There is more equipment in Riverhead.  You can walk around the equipment but none of it is open.  There are a couple of interesting pieces such as an MP70 double decker and an Osgood-Bradley car (American Flyer).

Greenport seems to have caboose, a boxcar (vintage 1960) and a wedge plow.  They do have a collection of railroadia and HO layout.  There is also a turntable, inactive, which, I think, was moved from its original location.

Turntable at Greenport is in its original location.  The bridge was moved there from elsewhere.

I'd certainly concur that Riverhead should be first, then a ride on the Scoot to Greenport for a day of shopping, dining, and a nice stay at one of the many B&B's or Inns in the area... maybe a ride on the Shelter Island Ferry to one of the inns or restaurants in Shelter Island Heights.

I was a voluteer for 10 years at the Railroad Museum of Long Island (RMLI). The Riverhead branch offers the Lionel Visitor center layout from Michigan. This layout has 80 plus accessories operated by you by pushing a button. The riverhead branch also has an operating G 16 train from the NY World's fair and there is a gift shop, a N scale layout and retired LIRR equipment. The Greenport branch offers the LIRR Jaws snowplow, a wood sided caboose and a box car. Greenport also has an HO scale layout and many railroad artifacts. I've attached photos of Jaws and the G16.  the LIRR runs a train from Riverhead to Greenport and both stations are within walking distance to the Museums. for more info and contact numbers visit the RMLI website.   Lenny
