So about a few weeks ago I acquired a MTH Proto-sound 2 CN U1F locomotive (6079) (20-3275-1?).  I went to put it on my tracks (recently cleaned fastrack, TIU, WIU control) and was able to start it up with no issues.  Ran the whistle a few times and the sounds also worked just fine (no garbling etc).  When I went to move the engine, it went about half a foot, then stopped (restarted/disconnected itself).

Now it'll still start up just fine, plays the sounds just as well, but anytime it goes to move it will simply restart itself/ flicker its lights (indefinitely as long as there is power to track), and disconnect from control.

Not entirely sure what is going wrong here and can't find much in terms of similar issues online.

Thanks in advance for any assistance or advice anyone can provide on the matter.

one thing you should try first is cut power when you hears sounds if sounds died immediately your battery is DEAD! you can try charging battery and then try again!

you might try a conventional reset while powered up and not moving, if it resets you'll hear 2 whistle toots. if it wont reset board probably needs repaired if you can find one it is a ps 2 3 volt board inside the engine or tender! p.s did you charge the battery before you tried the engine?

Since it's a motion issue, I'd stop tinkering until you do some research.  The stopping and resetting suggests overcurrent, perhaps a motor stall, and the board resets and isn't trying to move anymore.  It also might be a short to frame ground of one of the motor leads.

If you keep hammering it, you're likely to do more damage, it's time to find out what is wrong.

PS: the board is in the tender.

No I was able to test that out and the sounds (and hopefully hence the battery) seem to be okay.

If its a board issue I might try taking it to the hobby shop in the next city over to upgrade it to PS 3.0 (if they have the parts of course!), albeit I won't be able to get there in person till at earliest next April...
