I’m interested in Maine railroads and recently acquired a Maine Central F3 diesel by MTH. My rolling stock includes an MEC boxcar and caboose, and two Bangor and Aroostook boxcars. This is enough for a “Maine Train” in O gauge, as shown in the following photos and video. Does anyone else have an O gauge/scale “Maine Train?”

No locos or caboose, but got 3 or 4 Maine-related box cars. Will post photos later.

Your Maine diesel is gorgeous. Arnold

I'm in too Mel. Running Northeast lines would have to include equipment from the most north and east state in the lower 48. I also love the red white and blue SoM cars.

If I had the layout space I could conceivably run an opp session starting in this order: BAR/ MEC- NH- D&H- NYC- LIRR- PRR- B&O/C&O, and so on and so on

Need to add some MEC one day. That F3 is a beauty.

The Maine Central colors really make for a good looking caboose.

Hi Mel,

I'm originally from Maine and have lived in New England all my life, except for college in PA. I have nice memories of visiting Rigby Yard in South Portland with my Dad, and seeing all the yellow Maine Central and blue Boston & Maine diesels. I guess most of my fleet counts as "Maine trains," except for some New Haven and NYC.

The layout pics are from my old house, the engines on display are on shelves I just installed in our current place. I'm plugging away on my new layout now, which is much easier now that my engines aren't all over the table.

Thanks for this topic, and all your posts,

Alan P.

Blue comet! Yes, thanks. I was on my way to your neighborhood earlier this year but....well you know the rest! I also had work call me in right before attending the last Augusta show where we would have met , Rats!

John, Hope you and your wife are well and have a safe path for 2021.

Bob, I like that blue B&A BEEP and of course the 40 footers! Question: Does the Lionel Jeremiah O’Brian have plastic gears? How do they run? Look great!

I have the Atlas Maine caboose shown , in 2 rail. It’s a gem.

will attempt photos of Maine train equipment tomorrow, day off without cal! YAAAH!

I'm not sure about the gears. I gave it a good servicing when I bought it and except for a cranky e-unit it runs OK. Only one pick up roller though which is an easy fix when I get around to it. A Dallee reverse unit will go in it one day too.

Bob

And while there are other MEC & B&A boxcars  that need to be assembled I will be quite busy when retired while rebuilding  my O scale layout as well.
and now, the moment I have been waiting for.
Mel, I have unboxed the F3!

s some of you may be aware , the long overdue project of painting my brass W&R phase 1-C   44 tonner in MEC #11 green livery is next. I have two sets of custom made decals plus a commercial set. Now all I need is nerves of steel,  steady eye- hand coordination, and the hang of this thing called an airbrush! Lol.
that will complete all the Maine Central equipment I think I will run in my future.
Holy smokes! I am going to need a ton of trees! I will make them too, great examples all around me!

I have coffee scented MTH smoke fluid; it's my favorite and I bet you would love it, Leroof! LOL, Arnold

Thanks for everyone's MEC photos.   The Maine Central is my main railroad of focus.  Currently I'm focusing my collection on the toy semi scale side of O-gauge.

Hi Mike McCutcheon, nice collection! I had many of these at one time or another. I am a big fan of the three rail MEC. I recognize all of your trains except I can’t make out in the fifth photo down  GP9 in pine tree green MEC #569? Was this a custom paint? That guy that does all the MEC B&A equipment selling  at most of the Maine shows had one like that. I forgot his name now? Hmmm.   I bought a Reny’s boxcar yesterday from an associate of yours. I will be adding it to another video here later this week (I hope). Also big fan of Maine 3 railers, look forward to seeing more of your collection here, Thanks for sharing.

leroof

Mel, the MTH F3 instruction book states that running in standard DC eliminates  the horn and bell sounds! Maybe I should read that again! Hmmm, doesn’t sound right to me. Lol.
I will test run the MEC F3 with a DCC handheld NCE I borrowed to get the full feel of the loco. Afraid to use the old ZW  AC traditional power for this electronic  engine.
I will have to adjust the smoke cessation program first. Can’t wait to tell my colleagues that I got an F3 to cooperate!
MEC F3 report to arrive in the next few days.
how do you power your modern fleet? Being I am in the analog traditional KISS modality for all my postwar, this is quite a leap for me!

Arnold look! I have just entered the twilight  zone!

(Music from twilight zone theme playing).

Nice MEC  Mike! Looks like you have most of the MEC 3 rail stuff.
I remember back in the eighties Frank Roundhouse in the  NYC/NJ/LI metropolitan area sold the cars in such abundance that they were priced $22 to 25 each and  five for $100. I had a number of them. Favorites included MEC both pine Green and your Harvest Orange livery and that controversial UPS car (unlicensed). The paint jobs were fantastic and the cars smooth wheeling.

Dave Kenyon, that’s the custom painter guy! Yep. Thanks Gunny.

That GP7 #569 MTH is Atlas! Wow. Cool that you got a cab ride in Waterville.

I painted a number of custom  MEC locos and rolling stock back in the day. I have some photographs (remember them on paper!) I might be able to scan today and display. They will look rather flat! Lol.

I plan to test run my MTH F 3 on its maiden start up today. More on that later.

Hi Leroof,

The caboose and GP38 are both MTH Premier. The 4227 is a Railking. The top of the GP38 is green, which is correct, but the horns are silver, which isn't. MTH actually did two runs of these. Mine is from the first batch. I guess the later ones have correct horns and a slightly different shade of yellow. I think Mike McCutcheon's engines are from that later group.

I like SIRT's rebuilt block-letter cars, without roofwalks. I model circa 1970 and really should have some non-roofwalk cars mixed in.

And yes, Dave Kenyon was the "famous" MEC custom painter. He did a beautiful Lionel GP7 in yellow for me that I sold, as I've focused on MTH PS2/PS3.

I'm going to miss MTH! Still waiting for the B&M bluebird Alco switcher they promised in the last catalog. I've attached a couple more pics of my own McGinnis models.

Hey Alan P. I bet there are quite a few B&M modelers hoping to see that 1274 switcher (S2 or S4?) grace their pike! Kind of iffy at this point in time, but it could still happen. Were orders or deposits in for that model? hope you get yours.
Nice   BUDD car as well as bluebird GEEP.  I had my eye on the Williams traditional McGinness F3 A/A at one point.  I spoke to a couple of people at the big E that said it had plastic gears, which turned me off. I still like the look of it. Maybe a bit Eire, but I would adapt a shell to a postwar mechanism were that possible in keeping with the postwar operators vibe.

Will check out the electronic wizard modernism’s of MTH scale two rail F3 sometime today! Another new experience for me!

Not even close.   I only have a small percent of all the Maine Central that MTH has produced throughout  the years.

I definitely  remember chemical paper photographs.   I have a A.A in Photography and worked in a large photo processing  lab for 15 years.   That career ended when digital make it obsolete!

My adventure in the space age!

After a couple of hours in this new experience, I walk away feeling like DCC two rail is Not for me. I am a dedicated analog traditional dinosaur!  I am still attempting to get her back to factory default settings! As beautiful a MEC F3 she is, I probably will resell it.  I did not run it in DC as features such as the bell and Horn are not accessible in this engine on DC. Never been big on sound anyway but those two sounds are main stream! I did not want to run these electronics with traditional ZW AC power. Heard too many tales of woe regarding fried electronics. I will get some instruction from a buddy at work who does DCC before I decide to sell it.

Leroof,

Sorry to hear that. I don't have experience with MTH in 2-rail DC but the absence of whistle and bell in that mode is a deficiency in my opinion. My question is what happens if 2-rail AC is applied to the track with a Z-4000 transformer? Was your model delivered with pickup rollers (that have to be removed for 2-rail) or scale wheels?

Mike, I too did commercial photography, working in studios, doing all kind of darkroom printing and screening for commercial publications, and doing private portfolio work. I went to the Germain school of photography ( Woolworth building  NYC). enrolled in their professional career program. Studied additionally in the New School programs and worked for photographers in studios assisting,  setting up shots, arranging shoots, etc etc. those were exciting years! Still have my equipment, I know that it’s now obsolete. This film art form disappeared so suddenly! Still I can tell a difference between a print or a digital photo! Hey, I still play my LP’s through stereo components while running analog ozone machines(PW Lionel) Lol.

I do find digital camera use useful. Hey remember having Polaroid backs on Nikons and Hasselblads , to check what final shots would look like? Remember view cameras and that reciprocity factor!
but I digress,  back to MEC trains. I always had the MTH catalogs year after year. Yep, there were many New England examples.

thanks for sharing.

leroof

Mel, yes the engine was supplied with center rail pickup rollers separately packaged additionally. The unit has has scale wheels.
running scale wheels is not compatible with tubular track such as my traditional layout as you know.  ZW is my only AC power, and I have a MRC Control Master 20 for DC. I borrowed a friends hand held NCE DCC controller for this adventure.
all is not lost but it possibly can be run on a future O scale layout without all the bells and whistles. While not my cup of tea, it kind of defeats the design intent and purpose to run it without the DCC performance. So right now it has not been run, and I will ask what my DCC buddy thinks, he can thoroughly through his understanding and experience program it easily.  More on this situation to come in future installments.  Bottom line is If I can program and run advanced life support systems I can learn how to do DCC once I have trackage up! Just a matter of practice and time. This is not my Waterloo! Lol.

Thank you for starting this thread! We have seen a lot of Maine railroads! Apparent to me that there are so many MEC fans!

Wow! great numbers of Maine trains in operation! Cool layout too!

So many Maine 3 railers club cars in that train on the lower level.

On second level That E-8 has a fully MEC roster. Awesome sight!

Really like the bluebird GEEPs and the minuteman loads. Rumbling through.

great! You must have a lot of fun operating such a collection.

thanks for sending these photos.

There are a number of forum members here on this thread that might be in the know. Many live and have been raised here in Maine. I am not of the cultural fabric here as I am what affectionately is known as “from away” !  I am fortunate to know and live with those who have a rich New England railroad remembrance.  I missed out on all of that colorful past. Someone may  identify the interior of the passenger cars.
best of luck.

engine facility Photos I have located are currently two circa 1980 ish? 40 years ago! Yikes!
Roster includes two postwar frankensteinian F3’s mostly put together by parts found at shows. One Postwar former 2338 beat to ****  GP 7, one Postwar parts engine formerly 623 switcher, two MPC GP7’s and an airbrush, floquil paint, MEC decals and some imagination! There were (photos not found) couple of cabooses same colors as locos. All were later sold. What is left from that era is the kitbashed flat in photos. I sold all the locos when I moved to Thomaston from NYC. I believe I sold them at Augusta armory show  and NETCA in Massachusetts Long time ago.

An interesting aside from the primitive customization or debauchery of Lionel before any of that happening, my young understanding supporting wife Susan, patiently listened to my quest to find old Lionel shells for repainting. So being she worked in Manhattan she made a trip to Madison Hardware in search for old shells. She was cordially greeted by the two proprietors Lou and Carl. Who asked so what can we do for you young lady? So Susan says she is looking for old F unit shells like worn out Santa Fe shells or others. Karl asks her what are they for? Susan reply’s oh, my husband is going to repaint them for the Maine central colors! What happens next is total silence and that stare! (Twilight zone theme play here)...throat clearing,  he says young lady, there is nothing like that here but thanks for dropping by. So Susan says something to to effect you have newer ones for sale then? If I can remember he said that the shells would cost in excess of $100 to $150 how many did she want. She smiled and said, thank you sir. And headed for the front door.image

One has to be cautious of using the very earliest Lionel F3 shells  (1948) as they were made of styrene plastic and capable of losing form. Not to mention paint did not stick as well  (lots of 2333 NYCs have flaking paint).

Early MPC F3 shells were good quality and apparently dirt cheap.  Trainland in NY sold repaints in postwar road names for $29 @, in the 80s. If you assume they made some money  (of course),  and the painter got paid , then the raw shells must have been little.  They did lack the air vents in front and portholes but still a good starting point.  (it is easy to spot bogus "post war" F3s which are lacking those front air vents).

imageKind of fuzzy but here is a photo of my first O scale two rail MEC F unit. By mid 80’s I had acquired this (actually an A-A unit) that originally was All Nation with Open frame  double motors and a remarkable drive mechanism!   The photo was taken on the roof of the apartment building we lived in in Woodhaven NY. The roof was my painting station for many Model Railroad adventures. That is forest park in front of the building behind loco. Non windy days were best for painting up on the roof! The building is still there, the engine(s) sold immediately at one of the O scale meets at the Marlboro High school.

now I have the new Atlas MTH two rail DCS/DCC/DC/AC loco that is a computer of sorts. The former (pictured)  All Nation was so easy to use!

CPF3, I found all I needed from surplus box diving in the eighties. It was fun putting parts together, painting and decaling finishing etc.. Then running them! My F3’s all had vents and portholes etc.

imageMike, I looked high I looked low and could not fin my Franks roundhouse Green MEC.

but the photo of it I took back in the day is here! Lol. It sits on that narrow switching apartment layout!  I may have a photo of that layout too!

RSJB18 yes, he did look just like the guy in UP haha.

Melgar, you started it! lol!!

Heavy into the MEC and the new layout that is being built will be a MEC theme. Here are some pics of motive power and rolling stock. The 44t is a Yoder 3R, and the RS-11 is a Lionel redecorated unit. The wood chip hoppers are Weaver. The GP7 are Atlas and the one unit is being converted to a "chop nose"

Very nice collection. I have two Lionel RS-11's, New Haven and D&H. They are beauties. I don't think I could bring myself to repaint either though.

Mike, now you are pulling MEC rabbits outta your hat! Lol. In the early 80’s I painted some traditional Lionel flat cars pine green, added MEC decals, and cut a bunch of “logs” courtesy of forest park. They had a lot of weight to them. The only thing I needed were some bulkheads. Kind of like the Atlas industrial rail flats but with real logs! glued on.
MPC Chessie with MEC reporting marks! How cool is that? Error perhaps?
interesting.

Having been born in Biddeford, I too love Maine rolling stock, so thanks for all these pictures. My interests tend to run to the oddball stuff (again, born in Biddeford); here are a few of my custom paints, some awaiting weathering: Maine Central "Dairy Products" milk car, Maine Coast overpaint of D&H hopper (MC operated the Rockland Branch for just 10 years), VB gondola in MMA MOW service (Van Buren Bridge, shortest railroad in Maine?), Turners Island scrap metal gondola (second shortest railroad in Maine?).

Bruce Clouette

P.S. No giant potato car? Mainers will know what I mean.

I've got that same Chessie boxcar with MEC reporting marks, but I believe mine also has a stamped logo of a train collectors' or operators' group as if it was a meet giveaway or souvenir.  So I attributed the MEC reporting mark to that group.  It's boxed up, so I'll have to wait until next week to go dig it up and refresh my memory.

Leroof, it just occurred to me what we have in common: when in the mood, we have an exuberance for model trains.

So do many of our other Forum friends.

Happy New Year to all, Arnold

Wow ! More entries! So cool. Even if it’s B&M  lol!
But I really  like B&M  as well. Thanks  CTR.

Mel, what a solid loco that B&M3713!

so much MEC and B&M I really am amazed!

I've enjoyed this thread as my favorite railroads are the Boston and Maine and Maine Central.  I'd like to thank you guys for sharing pics and vids of your B&M/MEC collections.  I just finished getting my collection out of storage and on to shelves.  Most items are MTH with a smattering of Atlas, Weaver, and Lionel.  No layout yet, but I've almost finished planning it and expect to start construction shortly.image0image0

I Finally finished my MEC passenger cars! The green stripe is a little off. Maybe I worked for Lionel in a past life. I searched for awhile for the MTH set they made back in the mid 2000's the names were not accurate. Thanks to Highball Graphics I got a set of waterslide decals that helped me do the job. And yes I realize Maine Central never had a vista dome, a full baggage and for that matter they didn't even have a streamline observation car. I guess you could call it my "what if" passenger set.

Pat,

I would be a buyer and would like for E-Z Catch Train Shop to sponsor some smaller MTH steam and diesel locomotives for New England Railroads such as Maine Central, Bangor & Aroostook, Boston & Maine, Boston & Albany, New Haven, and Providence & Worcester.
