When I receive a new locomotive I send it to the Munoz Lines repair shop for initial maintenance. The Lionel manual calls for oiling all the appropriate spots on the running gear, axles, and rollers that need librication. It said nothing about periodic grease even though the two screws labeled "grease" are clearly intended for that purpose. Upon taking out the screws I found no evidence of lubrication. I greased them up.

That doesn't surprise me. Out of the box, my Legacy Southern Pacific GS-4, from previous years, squealed/squeaked like crazy. After lubricating the entire running gear to no avail, I finally took the boiler off the frame, and discovered that the motor drive shaft was the culprit, as it apparently NEVER been lubed at the factory.
For what we pay for these high end pieces of rolling stock you would think that the Chinese could lube them up but obviously Lionel needs QC at the manufacturing facility.

Then oil would get all over the paper, paint, and inside the box. I would rather do it myself so I have control of what and how much goes on/in.
