Question 1 - Does anyone know what the numbers on the top of a pullmor motor represent?  I am working on a couple of Lionel post war engines and was wondering what the 1 and 2 designation on top center of the PULLMOR motors represent.  See below picture.  Two of the engines have one of each motor in the engine.  I also have a pullmor motor which didn't have a number marked on the top of the motor.

Question 2 - One of the trucks has a worn gear which connects to the worm gear on the motor.  The truck is no longer available from Lionel.  Does anyone sell just the gear that interfaces with the motor.  I have a wheel puller to replace the gear.

I'm guessing the numbers are just mold numbers and nothing significant. Also, those are not postwar motor brush plates...

As for the gear replacement, with out your specific model, I can't be sure, but it is likely a 610-8806-576 They are not available from Lionel proper, but@Harry Henning of Henning's Trains, a forum sponsor, has it in brass: https://hennings-trains.shopli...-brass-13647485.html

the armature hole on 1 is lower than on 2.  I told you to look close.

I’m not a told person,….I knew they’re the same brush plates, wanted to know what in the world you saw different ……besides the obvious angle difference the photo was taken,….now you can be told,….the motor still attached to the truck is sitting flat on the table …..the other motor the fella is holding on a different angle in his hand,….he can play musical brushplates all day long,….they’re the same…

Motor placement & wiring - #1 gets blue wire on the left brush yellow wire on the right brush during assembly. The wires are switched for #2... this wasn't as important until electronic reverse units were used that had return-to-neutral-before-forward or just forward after power down rest.  With the old e-unit, both motors just had to have the wire colors switched between the two motors, the start-up direction didn't matter.

Thanks for all the comments/information and after further investigations at looking at several engines with pullmor motors, it looks like pullmor's with the 1 & 2 designation are on engines with electrons e units.  Every engine I looked at with mechanical e unit didn't have numbers, only the ones with electronic e unit.  So this seems to go along  with Rob's comments above, it's to distinguish between front and rear motor wiring with electronic e units.

Blimey, I was right!

I thought the 1 and 2 would be where to put the motor, front or back!   I often wondered about those as well, but I never bothered to chase it down.

A few things to think about.

First, I can assure you that there is only one tool to make that version of the part, and it has two cavities.

Second, if the molded numbers actually meant something during assembly, then there would be unique part numbers assigned to each. There aren't. This goes for both the brushplate as well as the entire motor with the brushplate.

Lastly, remember that for every #1, there's a #2. What happens when the part is used in a single motored engine? Trust me, they didn't throw out all those #2's just for the sake of having a motor with a #1 on it.

So what's the answer to your question? They're shown that way on the schematic as that's likely how the sample product used by the CAD illustrator was built.
