I'm an owner of a 40 year old Marklin 1 gauge transformer, track, and cars but no engine. Recently saw an available engine but uncertain of its year. Has Marklin changed it power system over the years?

Yes, Märklin changed its power system. Recent locomotives can handle AC/DC /DCC and Märklin Digital. Older locomotives were either AC or DC; sometimes this was switchable. I assume you transformer is AC? If you know the catalogue number of a locomotive it is possible to find out whether it is compatible with your transformer.
