I stumbled across this last night. An interview with Prime Osborn III, the layout is after the commercial break. Johnny still cracks me up after all these years.

Very entertaining! Hopefully, Mr. Osborn ran his Family Lines railroad better than that beautiful Marx layout! LOL!
Carson did a better job with that whistle! LOL!
Anyone notice the Bessemer and Lake Erie Alco S3 on the auto train elevated loop? No Marx S3 I've ever seen. A factory prototype?
Certainly wouldn't mind having that layout!

The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (Oct 23, 1974)
is what the YouTube page says that the video is posted on.
Cool layout.
A little cringe-worthy watching, as it sure was projecting the long held belief that we're all a bunch of dorks with our model railroads.

You mean we're not? LOL! My mother had been lying to me all this time.

Unfortunately, it didn't give Marx a whole lot of good publicity, as I think every train they ran derailed during the three minute show. Not to say the equipment was faulty, surely it was the people that set up the layout, but still not good press.
Mark Trains start about 1 hour, 10 minutes on U tube video.

That was painful to watch. Yikes.
For something that was pre-recorded, the Marx people should of done a better job.

All the late night talk shows are recorded in real time. They shoot within the time of the shows as they air later stopping only for commercial breaks. We call it "live to tape".
They never did get that auto train rolling again. On a side note, I did notice the commercial for the "Tomorrow Show" starring Tom Schnieder, who was an avid train collector.
Uhh...that would be Tom Snyder.
That is all nice, I personally really enjoyed the jacket, but that’s just me. Had a circus feel to it.
After reading about the man, he seemed like he was an old time rail road guy.....that clip is a window back thru time
