Hello, all.  I am starting this thread a little late, since I was called away for the day to assemble the John Oliver Train set at the Electric City Trolley Station and Museum in Scranton, PA.  I will post more on this in the 3-rail forum, but here are a couple of photos of what we did today. IMG_0537

Now, on to the real trains.  I did catch a few recently.

Steamtown's Nay Aug Gorge Limited train on Sunday, September 10 is caught drifting downgrade over South Washington Ave in Scranton, PA.  Baldwin 0-6-0 no 26 is the mainstay on this train this year.

I also caught her charging up the line on the next run (11:30) past some of the University of Scranton gymnasiums.

Friday, September 15, I found a circus in town.

It was nice catching not only the cars, but this beauty attached to them.  RS11 no. 1804 from the Delaware Lackawanna.  The mix of colors gives the train a bit of a circus-like look to begin with.  The cars only spell it out louder.

This is the elephant/horse car.  It can be either, but a car like this holds more horses than elephants.  Go figure.

The sleepers.  One holds 14 people and the other is good for 24.  They all came from the Blue unit train.

To find out more about the Circus Cars, check out www.eldcps.org to see what happens next.  They make for quite a sight.

I'll add to the "real thing."  During the past month I've been shooting steam with photo gear period correct to the engines.  This really challenges me as set up is slow, I only get one shot, and the fastest shutter speeds on my vintage 1905-1925 lenses is 1/150s!  There are some steam engines running in South Dakota--the pair of switchers at Prairie Village (Madison, SD) and of course the famous 1880s Train in Hill City, SD.   Needless to say, both are fun to watch (and hear!)   So, a few shots taken with either Chamonix 045n 4x5 and Heliar 150mm (c.1922) or a Century Camera Co. Model 41 (c.1905) with 125mm Velostigmat (c.1908), both on 4x5 Acros film:

It's now the end of September, and all the threshing shows have ended.  I love those!  I had another great year and caught a number of nice photos.  Here's some from my favorite show, in Andover SD--the James River Valley Threshermen's Reunion:

The 1858 Rogers 4-4-0 "Satilla" in East Dearborn, MI in 1927 for the city's 100th anniversary.  Today it resides in the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn.  It last ran when it pulled a train from the Detroit Michigan Central depot to Greenfield Village in celebration of the donation of C&O Allegheny 1601 in 1956.  Also a Detroit News article describing its use during the 1927 celebration.  The photo is an old news photo I recently acquired.
