Midwest Monday

Well Lee, that is some tanker...or is it the LNG tender for the diesel in front?  I know UP was experimenting with natural gas powered locomotives and wondered if that tanker could be one of the tenders in use???

Oh well...since Lee opened with the UP, I thought I would follow suit.

Here is one of my favorite GE 44 tonner's, the UP version from Williams by Bachman.  New to the L&S, just purchased, but I really like these loco's as they go around my little layout with its tight 0-27 curves easily.  Has sound as well, great motor sounds.  Yes-- you can just see the front end of the Lionel 6464 - 100 Western Pacific ("rides like a feather") boxcar from 1954-55

A lot older, from 1950-51, is the Lionel # 2023 UP Alco AA units.  This unit from Lionel's "Golden Anniversary" set was put out in this color scheme to celebrate 50 years of Lionel toy train production (1900-1950). The golden years for sure, but we all know that it doesn't last ...

Away from home and layout this Monday.  Recently was able to purchase two Atlas C628 Penn Central shells.  So, I'm looking for either Atlas dummy units or powered units - to buy and then swap shells on.  Let me know if anyone has one or a lead on one or the other.  Thank You, and Happy MwM.  JP

Nice snag on the Alco shells.  I have always wanted one of the C628's in PC.  Didn't have the funds when they came out.  Oh, well, More money for other locos now.

Good morning MWM fans. Here’s one I bought at Menards last spring finally got it on the layout over the weekend. Enjoy your week and be safe.

Since I moved to the Upper Great Plains (still Midwest, right?)  I have become interested in local roads.  The M & StL built an impressive depot in Watertown, SD, & they had plenty of company in Watertown:  Great Northern, C& NW, and of course the Rock Island.  The boxcar is an MTH Premier model - purchased used.

Very nice thanks for posting I’m a big fan of the M&STL just don’t have a lot of it.

@trestleking - what a great boxcar.  I posted the Lionel (MPC) version of the M&StL car on this thread back on 7/12 but its no where near as detailed and it isn't outside braced.  Thanks also for the pictures of the former depot now a museum.  Don't know if I will ever get to SD but Watertown is now on my "list".

@lee drennen - neat Burlington Route , love the red, I also have several Menards cars and like them a lot. They are very high quality and Menards is such a great company to deal with.

Here is my contribution for today.  First a Lionel Rock Island box car from 1977-78 so just about 8 years after MPC took over the production of Lionel trains from the original company.  I like these MPC cars, they are good quality, have colorful graphics, run well, and are usually available at a modest price.

Here is a recent Atlas purchase (they were having a 50% off sale). The T&P was a cooperative partner of the Missouri Pacific system from the late 1800's until they merged officially in 1976.  It never reached the "Pacific" on its own but had connecting service especially for named passenger trains with the Southern Pacific and that way it did reach Los Angeles.  Its named passenger trains were labeled "Eagles"  with the most famous being the Texas Eagle from various points in east Texas to El Paso (and then connecting with SP and hence California) and the New Orleans Eagle from Dallas / Ft. Worth to New Orleans.

The old Cincinnati Northern ran through Van Wert, Ohio.  Became part of New York Central, then Penn Central.  Most of the line was abandoned by Conrail.  Some of the track is still intact in Van Wert as an industrial line.  Here is a video from happier days:

Here’s a Lionel O27 MoPac Hopper for this Monday. I received it over the weekend. Have a great week.

This Monday's Midwest offering is a Kansas, Oklahoma & Gulf Ry hopper by Atlas.   Whistlestop Trains in Oklahoma City was nice enough to order it in for me a few years ago. The K,O & G started in 1919 , did start in Kansas, south into Oklahoma & just inside Texas.  The name disappeared in 1970.   The paper clip came from a vendor at the December OKC Train Show, always a good meet, IMHO.

Hot off the UPS truck from Mr. Muffins.  Special Run Penn Central GP30s #2222 and 2189.  Beautiful job!  I want to look at pictures of actual units.  Horns are totally different on each unit, I suspect making them as close to the real unit as possible, pretty cool.  Looking forward to running them with #2202 and 2246 for a Penn Central four powered unit GP30 train - IN THE MIDWEST.  Stay Tuned.

Well guys, its  not yet Monday, but again I have to travel to Ft.Worth in the morning so I won't be able to post "on time" so it will have to be early.  I am going back to one of my favorite "fallen flags" the Rock Island.  Today these are two of what collectors tend to call "plug door" boxcars (which in fact they are not) and are really just non-sliding door, smaller boxcars by Lionel.These little guys work really well on my tight curves and small clearances, but also they are fun to collect because they often do not demand high prices.  Anyway here are two very different Rock Island 0-27 boxcars by Lionel

First the # 7903 from 1983 in the blue "R" livery.

Next the 16200 from 1987-1988, advertising the "Route of the Rockets"

Both these guys are pretty modest and small in size but they look good on my smaller layout and they are light enough to be pulled easily by any of the new smaller locomotives.

OBTW just for you folks who like details, note the differing number schemes on these two boxcars even though the mold is obviously the same for the body, although the truck side frames are different...why?  Well this date marks the transition from General Mills Products Company or MPC who made Lionel trains from 1970 - 1985 and a new company called Lionel Trains Inc or LTI who made Lionel Trains from 1986-1995.  The new company changed the product numbering scheme for reasons not really advertised.  The MPC scheme really reflected the scheme used by the original Lionel company the new scheme did not.
