I'm getting the impression Erik is nearing the point where he is ready to start production on the SD45 project after the National Convention in July.  I would say that if you're thinking about any of the units that you contact him with any questions so that you can get your reservations in before the National Convention.  I know he will be at the National Convention, so it'll be a great time to stop by and talk with him in person, get a firsthand demonstration of the drive, lighting, etc.

I'm reserving some Denver Rio Grande Western SD40T-2s' and some SD45's that he is running in this project.

This is the same thing Erik told me in the last few day - order books will close after the National . It was great from my perspective because it should allow me to add a couple more models to my order . Also, I'm sure some guys aren't going to want to hear this , but the F45 and FP aren't going to be done at this time . For variety I was going to add a F45 , but Erik said they're a no-go . Maybe down the road .

Bryan,

Yeah, I had a Santa Fe Superfleet FP45 on reserve and Erik told me the same.

Adam, It's only money and no one says you have to have a fleet of 100's of locomotives.  I would rather have a handful of high quality locos then 100's of locos which contain too many compromises.  What I've started to do is thin out my fleet of Atlas and MTH locos, which I use primarily for standins until I can find some higher quality locos like those from MMW, Key, OMI, etc..

IMO, the interesting thing here is that other manufacturers have proven the market does exist for such higher quality hyrid/non brass locos, but I don't see Atlas or MTH going down that path for 2R anytime soon.  I think the innovations that Lionel has done in 3R with their GEVO, Genset, and some of their steamers most certainly shows the manufacturers are interested in innovation and raising the bar and the modelers are interested in buying those products which have a higher cost.  Once more manufacturers bring comparable innovation to the market, costs will go down.

O scale to me is where HO and N were 15 years ago.  Brass models (recent releases) are generally more accurate, have a higher cost, lack some of innovation offered in mainstream consumer products but run fairly well.  We are starting to see the brass importers go to the next level with detail, features and operation such as the most recent Key releases and the OMI SD70 project.  IMO, MMW is taking that a step further with their SD45 project with more detail and operating features for a higher degree of realism.

Now I get to the wave, which many on the forums have been asking for.. Once you get the wave started with more realistic products, higher degree of accuracy, yes, the wave goes into rolling stock, structures, track, etc....  There are signs of this movement, just that we suffer from the having manufacturers design their products with a one size fits all mentality.  Nothing wrong with 3R, but it influences 2R products which means that our truck sideframes are too wide, pilots on locomotives have some innaccuracies to accomodate moving pilots, non scale details, etc..  Other manfacturers which are known for higher quality more innovative products in smaller scales looking on, or not even interested, because the O Scale community is so segmented and small compared to HO and N.

While there are enough products in O Scale 2R for most eras, post 1995 to present day have some hugh holes, so unless you want to build whatever you need yourself, you'll buy what is available in brass and pay more, or compromise with likely an inaccurate model and pay less.

I exchanged emails with Erik today where he confirmed the reservation quantities for the SD45 project are sufficient and that they are firming up the final numbers.  If you're interested in reserving any locomotives from this project now is the time before it's too late.     Sounds like reservations will be closed within the next 4 weeks.

I know many forum members got a chance to see Erik's incredible innovations first hand while at the national, so show your support!!!

Further information on the models being offered, the incredible features and how to reserve a model can be found on Midwestern Model Works website

I talked to Eric at convention, although I am not personaly interested in these models I can tell you he has not contracted with a builder yet so this project is quite aways out still. There was not much in the way of models for this project on his table, so I am not suprised the site does not show much.

Erik has updated the website, as posted from the General News tab

7/25/12 – We have just returned from the O Scale National meet in New Jersey and would like to thank those of you for coming to our booth to say hello and chat with us about the project. We are currently discussing the final details with a few Korean builders, but before making a decision on which one will be building our project we are taking steps to make sure we are going to get the best possible match (builder to model produced) that we can to be sure our models are at or better than what we have promised in terms of quality. Since the reservation process is going to be coming to a close soon, this decision will also be made soon. New info regarding this subject will be posted in future updates as it becomes available.

We also have news about our next project. Please visit our “Future Projects” page for more information.

In terms of cutting off reservations, we will be accepting new reservations for the next four weeks. After that time, we will be limited to what can be reserved. Once the information for the reserved models has been compiled for the general outline drawings (G.O.D.s) for the builder, we will only be able to take reservations on locomotive types that have prior reservations. There will not be sufficient time to go back and round up information for unchosen types at that time so we urge anyone who may be “on the fence” about reserving to make a decision soon, as we don’t want to have to disappoint individuals who didn’t reserve in time.

In addition the Future Projects tab now contains the following

With the reservation process for the current SD45 project drawing to a close, we have decided on our next project solely on the basis of the requests we have been getting from those of you who have participated in the “voting” process. We will continue to take suggestions for future projects and will endeavor to produce the models that receive the most “votes”. The winner, by landslide, for the next project is the SD40-2. We are taking official reservations for the SD40 and SD40-2 as of July 25, 2012. If you have interest in this model, please email us with your reservation as soon as possible. We will be trying to get the groundwork for this second project well underway while the SD45 project is in production, thereby reducing the time between projects.

The following list of locomotives are garnering serious attention from all of you as well. We will try to keep a list of locomotives that are in serious contention only. Locomotives on this list have a minimum of 10 requests. As other locomotives receive more “votes” and reach 10+ requests, they will be applied to this list for future consideration. Stay tuned to this page and the “General News” page for updates and information. Please tell friends and fellow O Scalers to visit this page and give us their suggestions. This is the only way we will know what O Scalers want to see produced.

  • SD7, SD9, SD18, SD24 & SD26
  •  C44-9W & AC4400
  •  GP38 & GP40
  •  F Units
  •  SD70, SD70M & SD70MAC
  •  GP7 & GP9
  •  RS1, 2 & 3

There are other types that have been suggested, but we’ll need more requests to add them to this list. If we continue to get requests for any of these units, it will certainly help toward ensuring they will be produced in the future. So if there is interest, please drop us an email and let us know.

Erik has updated the page to show which SD45's are not going to be produced in this run due to no reservations and which ones need more reservations to be produced or they will be subject to not being produced as well!   Right now he lists 23 different variations that will be produced and 5 models which need more reservations in the next four weeks.
