I missed an auction on eBay and I can't get it out of my mind. I should have bid more. I bid $162.77 in the last 10 seconds. It went for only $167. It was a Lionel Southern Locomotive and die cast tender. http://pictures.trainz.com/200...003-15-07/t8_001.JPG. Lionel #6-28016.

What other locomotives are similar to that one? What other road names? I have never seen that one before.

If you go to the Lionel site, it won't find the product because it's more than 10 years old.

Why did that loco go so cheap? It originally listed for $499. I never had seen that particular casting. I want it.  Someone else has one for sale, but they want a fortune. Why did that one go for only $167?

Didn't I screw up?

The way that I approach da' Bay depends on how bad I want the item and it's relative availability both on eBay and the market. If it's a fairly frequently listed item I go for what I think the lowest bid will be to take it on the premise that I will eventually get it for a price I like. On the other hand, if it's something I GOTTA have and it appears once in a blue moon, depending on condition and seller of course, I bid the max that I would be willing to pay or in very rare cases, a bid that I KNOW will win. You pays your money and you takes your chances

If anyone is familiar with that particular engine, do yo know if it came in other road names? Can you tell anything from the Lionel number 28016?

This engine pops up often and it does have a nice set of Railsounds. The only gripe I have with it is the filled-in cab window because of the can motor; other than that, it's a good locomotive. Other roads included New Haven, Union Pacific, etc. But the Southern was the only one painted green. I can't be sure, but I think these engines were delivered at the end of the "Moreau Era."

Always remember that any time dealing with Trainz auctions, many many people are looking at those auctions because they trust Trainz; always put in your MAX bid for these auctions.

Do you understand that had you bid 195.00 you may still have lost? It takes some time to understand how ebay works and what the best way for you to bid is. Be patient-you will see your item again one day and then you can get it! That's also part of the fun of this hobby and makes you really appreciate and enjoy the pieces you buy or win by auction.

I understand that. But when it sells for just one increment higher than yours, it means there was just one other bidder higher. It is less likely that any one other bidder bid inordinately high. It is more likely that it was close. But I understand the bidding process. I should have bid $205 for that engine, easy. I still don't get why it went so cheap.

(BTW, I like the spell correction feature on this new website. I could otherwise never have spelled "inordinately" corrrectly!)

Hi Jay,

Just keep watching ebay, one will come around again. In December, I won the Union Pacific version (6-28034), and I was the only bidder, New in Box for 109.99 + 16.00 shipping. Don't try to understand ebay, it makes no sense some times, and can drive you to an asylum, if you try.

I Hope that you do find one though, the 28034 has TMCC and Railsounds, I also have the similar non-TMCC Union Pacific version, they are both very smooth runners, and pull very well too.

Good Luck on ebay, another will show up, just be patient,

Doug

Many times I have 'shaved it close'...and lost. Other times, I have plunked down way more than I thought the item would go for....and lost. If I really, really, really want something badly - I generally take the approach of at least doubling the last bid only to 'win' at 50 cents more than the last bid. And lastly, I have seen brand new engines listed at 99 cents slip past the final bell without a single bid. It's a wild, wild world.

Not sure if this would be considered 'fun'....but it does keep it interesting!
