I have two MTH protosound1 (QSI) engines that I run on the same layout with conventional controls. I once had a Lionel TMCC engine that I ran on the same layout, and in conventional control it just crept along. I am thinking of buying an Atlas engine with the Lionel TMCC. If I do buy that engine, will I need to run it separately with Command Control and Cab1 or Cab2?

Bob: The Atlas"O" engine should behave like any other TMCC equipped locomotive that doesn't see the TMCC/Legacy signal; it will run in conventional mode subject to the track voltage it sees at the moment.
If you do want to run it in a command setting, it will run with the TMCC 32 speed-step architecture.
Hope that helps or at least doesn't confuse you further. BTW, the Atlas"O" engines are good runners.
I just bought Barry's book. After some study, maybe I'll go DCS and operate both.
If you want good low speed control, you'll probably want either Legacy or an ERR Cruise Equipped locomotive. The plain TMCC equipped ones don't do as well low-speed with conventional control.
Guess it depends on the loco. My K-Line GG1 with TMCC creeps just fine.
Otherwise if you have no base, a TMCC locomotive acts just like a conventional locomotive. I run TMCC and PS-1 locomotives all the time with only a transformer.
