Modifying the Lionel 6-17216 PRR DD Boxcar

This Lionel "standard" model was first issued in 1995 (BLT 1-94 LIONEL).  It appears to be modeled after a modern outside ribbed 50 foot boxcar. The lettering is not correct for this particular car.

MTH rollerbearing style trucks were mounted on the model so that the trucks actually pivot on the truck centers. The original Lionel truck mounting is offset. On this model the plastic underframe was also painted to simulate a wooden floor.

These double doors and the similar single door 50' modern boxcar from Lionel are some of my favorites for running at train shows: scale sized, colorful graphics, relatively inexpensive and indestructible. They do look much better with MTH roller bearing trucks and I have replaced the Lionel trucks with MTH trucks on most of my fleet.
