Jim started this thread and has posted many fine videos from our Hi Rail Modular Train Club in Griffith IN.  I had always wanted to put a camera on a model train but the idea of an unsightly camera on a flatcar was not appealing. Now there are several WIFI hi def action cameras used by model drone enthusiasts that are suitable to be placed on any flat surface on a model train, including the engine cab. They can't be totally hidden but are not unsightly. The kids see the cameras and wave. I am working on concealing a camera in an Atlas container. These cameras also provide a real time wifi monitor that can be displayed on your phone or tablet, ala like the new Lionel Theatre car in the 2017 catalog.

I have taken videos on our triple track club layout and just posted 5 of them on  my new Youtube Channel "O Scale Train Club- Camera on Train Ride." These are all in full hi def 1080p and look great on 50 inch screen. You need an hdmi cable or wireless link to get the video from your device to your TV.

Here is the first one, 14+ min, 1080p 60fps, several views from my two cameras-  ATSF Warbonnet Passenger, Erie Freight and UP Intermodal are featured. Video starts with UP cab view coming out of the yard and the ATSF coming across from the right. Then you will get several trips around the layout to see the other trains and scenery.

Here is third video from my "O Scale Train Club- Camera on Train Ride" Youtube channel. Features Jim's "really smoking"  ATSF Santa Fe Steam Passenger, Metra Passenger, UP Freight,  Erie Freight, and my "smoking a little" UP Intermodal. Cameras on the UP cab, 5 cars back, and at end of train on the UP Intermodal- 12 minutes. Video starts with the UP Intermodal going out of the yard to the outside main, then camera view switches to camera at end of the train. Then around the layout several times. Return to the yard is not included but we pass the Metra backing into the yard at the end.

John,

I loved your videos.  You did a great job editing them, especially the last two where you interlaced segments at various key points to give the effect at viewer would have visiting the layout.  The perspective changes from just seeing the beginning of the train to watching the the middle and farther back.  Great concept.  You may have a second calling as a Hollywood editor.

I may post one or two more videos when I get back home.

Jim,

Yes, after looking at some other train ride videos I decided 10 or 15 minute cab only rides would not be as interesting.

I believe the way you placed your camera views makes your videos  look very realistic (The extra rail is the only giveaway.)  Brings back the days of  watching trains in a small town. The use of the zoom was not overdone in the "NYC Double Cross Into Yard" video and has a definite Pentrex/Video Rails/railfan look!

I'm using Foxeer Legend 2 and Runcam 2 wifi action cameras used aboard model drones, RC vehicles, trains, etc. Hi definition, wide angle can be narrowed, exposure settings but no zoom or focus setting. Compact with internal rechargeable batteries. Operate using your android or IOS phone or manual buttons on the cameras. Available for about $70.  Requires micro SD card.

I admire the quality of the track on your club layout.  The straight track is straight and level, and the turnouts are smooth.  Two thumbs up to the leaders and workers who built this track.

Ok its Thursday  Here is a new one..Ok can you blame me A proud father.  Nope.  There are CB&Q GP35s in the very beginning (30 sec) and at the end an NE2 waycar Well, there you go . . . . that justifies it.  As a musician myself, I am amazed at the size of the chorus and the orchestra (and the bell choir too).  It's good to see so many young folks participating.

What amazing is with the exception of a few teachers playing some of the instruments. It was all the kids from the Elementary schools in the district. The Music teachers did a great job. All the kids in the choruses were selected to represent their school based on ability and also most of the kids were honor role students at their respective schools. I'm pretty proud of my son. He plays the Guitar( Same one I played when I was much younger ) now wants to play the saxophone too. On top of that he is high Honor role at the Center for gifted students. My middle daughter plays the flute and is also on the honor role. My oldest who is also autistic loves to sing and has a pretty good voice. Since I am just an career army guy I am still trying to figure out where all that brain power came from.

Monday, May 15, time to make a Model Movie. Take one cell phone, fasten to gondola with rubber bands and padding, turn out room lights, and run some trains. Have your Lion Chief Plus A5 0-4-0 move the gondola back and forth on the industrial lead. Never know what you might see.

Darn Hoping for that Victoria Secret Model. Instead we get Amtrak,  well after all its Monday.
