Hi Folks,

The recent Notch 6  podcasts (hats off to Derek) with the Lionel executives were very insightful, especially regarding the way they see potential new customers (women), Lionel's close association with Christmas, and their views on licensing, like with Warner Brothers for the Polar Express.  This November, Fox is supposed to release a new Peanuts movie in time for the 50th anniversary of the Charlie Brown Christmas special.  Lionel has a wonderful opportunity to ride the coat tails of that movie by bringing back that beloved Snoopy and Woodstock handcar, perhaps in a set with simple DC transformer.  Below is the movie trailer that surprised me with how well they updated the animation while being true to the original characters.   If Lionel executives could get a brief train sequence in the movie, perhaps Charlie Brown and Snoopy on a handcar, wow, goldmine!!!!!

Lionel executives, are you watching?

Take care, Joe.

Probably too late for the movie tie-in. But hey, you never know.

Hi Sean,

According to a press release last week, they are still working on the movie, but I guess it is just wishful thinking on my part.  Could they rush a half minute sequence and would the storyline accommodate a handcar ride?   Good questions, I guess.

Take care, Joe

Joe,

Nice Charlie Brown and Snoopy Handcar!  I would purchase one of those if Lionel made it!!  I was hoping Lionel would offer another Peanuts Boxcar for this Christmas...maybe next year!  I would like to see them create a Peanuts set with LionChief technology.  They also could also put the handcar on Depressed center flatcar and offer it as an additional car to the set.  I placed my Snoopy and Woodstock handcar on depressed center flatcar and run it around my Christmas Tree along with my other Peanuts Christmas/Thanksgiving rolling stock cars.  Be nice if they could have the Peanuts Theme song to play in the train too, but that would be another copyright.    Ken

Hi Ken,

I love your Peanuts themes on your Christmas layouts!!!! Nicely done!

I posted a "how-to" vid on YouTube about changing the heads on the handcar figures since I get a few questions now and then.  Unfortunately, the original Lionel Charlie Brown head wasn't quite right, but it is possible to do the conversion yourself if you take the plunge make the cuts:

Too bad, my Snoopy hand car is a big hit around the holidays

Hi Bruce,

If the movie is well received, then it should be a fixture every year and Lionel has a chance to capitalize on it on a recurring basis, like they do with Polar Express and Thomas.  Getting a train sequence in the film would be fantastic!

Take care, Joe

It would be great if they put this into the movie.  I look forward to seeing it with my daughter in Nov.

Hi KHayden93,

Thanks for the compliment!  It was a little scary the first time I took a saw to one of the figures, but after the 7th time, its matter-of-fact.

Take care, Joe.

Hi MNCW,

I would like to find a better, higher resolution image of that cartoon and print it as a poster.  I remember seeing it as a kid; it was a daily strip, not the larger Sunday comic.  I had that on my old drive from an old Win 98 machine and don't know where I got it.

Take care, Joe.

Hi RedBall342,

I don't think Lionel is aware of the potential new customer they would have with a Charlie Brown and Snoopy (Peanuts) product line because they are thinking of children (adults who buy trains for children) and older men (who buy prototypical product) as their main customer.  It is women of a certain age, the Hallmark ornament customer, who would be their "new frontier."

From my point of view (the retailers I follow), seems like this movie snuck up on a lot of manufactures.

Take care, Joe.

P.S.  And they need to do more than just slap a Peanuts logo on a boxcar.  J.
