Hello ALL

This is an old and favorite N.Y. City on location 1946 era movie of mine - called THE DARK CORNER.  It is about a private detective in NY City whose new office is located in a building on the 2nd floor of a building at the S.E. Corner of Grand Street and "The Bowery" Avenue.  And his corner office many huge corner office windows face west and north directly to the tracks of the IRT 3rd Ave EL at the south end of the GRAND STREET Express Station.  In the many office scenes in the film there are many views of 3rd Ave EL local and express trains of MUDC Type cars (like the one I modeled) passing by up and downtown, complete with their sounds, clearly seen outside the windows in the background.   A number of scenes are filmed live on the corner of Grand Street and the Bowery around and under the EL station.  And the office scenes were filed live in that on location building, in a rented office set up by the film company and outfitted for the shooting. And of course the frequent clanging of trolley car bells on the still operating Third Ave. Railway System trolleys running under the El (intil Early 1947)

Most of it is filmed on location in parts of N.Y. City Manhattan, and stars actress Lucille Ball in a very serious main role as Private Eye  BRAD GALT's "girl friday".  Excellent drama movie and story plot -- The link is to the whole entire length of the movie...about 1 1/2 hours approx. time duration to watch on site here.

The opening scenes with the credits are shot from the EL Station stairway bridge onm the north east corner,  leading into the below the platforms Station Token Booth Mezzanine  from along the uptown local track side of the 3rd Ave El's GRAND STREET Express Station on the "Bowery". To the nostalgia laden sounds of the famous 1940's music instrumental called "Manhattan Serenade" .  GALT's building still stands on the  south east corner today - tho the EL itself was removed by late 1955.

I first saw this movie on TV in the 1952-53 period (and the EL was still operating past my house back then) - and haven't seen it until recent years, and it was again just on ME-TV-2 the other night.

Anyway - for those older viewers from the NYC area back then - who may enjoy it - this is for you !

NOTE:  I have inserted TWO current day scenes of the building where Detective BRAD GALT's office was located - and ONE current day scene looking across to where  seen in movie opening scenes, the then actual Bank Building was diagonally across the Bowery-Grand St. intersection from his office.  SO you will get a feel for the location of his office in relation to the real outside area of it.

I have ALSO added many additional photos from my collection showing what the area of the filming looked like around and under the EL in that period of 1940's-early 1950's

Regards - Joe F

BRAD GALT's office,  and the EL Station stairway at right across Grand St. was seen in the movie

from his office windows facing Grand Street. This is the way the immediate area looked in 1946 !

2nd floor corner offices, the movie sequences were filmed for the detective office
