I picked up a MTH 0-8-0 at a swap meet recently. I owned one of these back in 1986-1990 when they were first introduced. This version has bells, whistles, choo-choo, and talking. I am old school and find these "distractions' irritating.  I am thinking of having a friend, who is an aircraft electrican alter the wiring in the tender so the speaker can be turned off. That way if I sell this later on all the that noise will still be available and the battery will still be charged!  Does that seem reasonable?

I tried that. I used a small screwdiver to turn the the volume screw all the way counterclockwise as per the instructions. Now the sound effects come back on of their own accord and then cut out! While they are on---they are LOUD!

so either you have a bad pot that maybe sometimes is cured by turning it up just a hair from zero, or .....

your adjusting the smoke volume!?
