Browsed the 2016 MTH vol 1 catalog and checked out the 611 J that I am considering adding as an "unusual" engine to my roster.  One is the Imperial and other is Premier.  As I only have O-42 curves that automatically limits me to the O-31 Imperial engine.  Aside from various mechanical details/features between the lower and higher cost units, I read that both had Proto 3 sounds with passenger station proto effects, but the Premier could do quillable whistle but not the Imperial.

Are there different flavors of Proto 3 boards such as memory size, inputs and outputs that preclude including the quillable sound effects in the Imperial software?  Not having quillable whistle is not a deal breaker for me, just curious for reason.

No, the electronics are the same. It's the engine firmware that's different.

However, putting in a playable whistle is labor-intensive and is reserved fro the higher-priced Premier steamers.
