Good Afternoon,

I have an MTH LV Alco S-2   (part # 20-2939-1) that i plan on upgrading to PS3.  Will the standard 4ohm speaker that is supplied with the upgrade kit fit inside the MTH alco S-2?  Has anyone on the forum upgraded a PS2 Alco S-2 to PS3?

Thanks,

Nick

Gunrunnerjohn,

There are several reasons why I'm wanting to upgrade to PS3.  First, Ive discovered that the sound volume is much lower than my other diesels; if I place the engine next to one of my PS3 engines, I can barely hear the alco S-2.  About a year ago, I had my local authorized MTH repair station replace the speaker with a 4 ohm 3W speaker, but still didn't make anything better.  If I upgrade to PS3, could I place a larger (more wattage) speaker in this locomotive?

Another issue Ive had with this engine, when running the locomotive on our club layout, it doesn't seem read the DCS signal as well as some of my PS3 engines.  I've had issues adding this engine into to the DCS remote, and often get the "not found" message.  Sometimes, I would receive the dreaded "Out of RF Range" signal in the same area that a PS3 Engine responds fine with no issue.

I have the PS3 version of this engine - and I replaced the speaker in it because the previous owner soaked it with smoke fluid.  Even after replacing the speaker, the volume is not too terribly loud.  I don't think a PS-3 upgrade will fix your sound woes.  The output of the speaker is just not very strong.

It may fix your DCS issues - but the "Out of RF Range" message is usually related to the remote's distance from the TIU I thought.
