OK, so I guess you all read the Atlas/MTH announcement.    There is still a lot to shake out, but the most important thing, from where I sit, is that Atlas will have a new production facility, and new items should be coming out more regularly.  Also we should eventually get more out of the box 2 rail trains available.  1st, if they asked me, would be to get the Atlas SW's, RS-11's, and VO-1000/s done, along with RSD-15's and GP-7's that are supposedly already in the hopper.    Then I'd like to see 2 rail Alco S units, and the E-8's for starters.  But I guess we'll see.

As for MTH, so far it seems that we will be able to continue production with special runs of various items. Both myself, and a handful of other dealers, so far are helping make this possible. Whether it continues under the MTH banner, or a different name IDK.  There are no guarantees for the future, but im optimistic.   The people im working  with, are great to work with, and always try to make things work, rather than say "we cant do that".  Im hoping maybe someday we can do SW-1's, AS-616's, SW1500's,  and a few more in 2 rail.

Right now I've contracted with MTH to do a special run for us of SW1500's in T.R.R.A and IHB, and RS-1's in Morristown & Erie and Black River and Western .   Alas, they will only be in 3 rail right now.  Something is better than nothing.

The consolidation of the production end of model railroading, has certainly left those of use who lioke doing special runs, a lot of opportunity.  At least so far.  We'll see how it all goes.

Questions?, comments?..... I guess most questions should go to the respective companies.  Things are in a state of flux still, and even if i was told something yesterday, it might not be true today.   Im glad to have had a nice relationship with Atlas and MTH over the last 20 years or so.

I haven't heard the news. Your saying Atlas has bought MTH? Interesting. Sure would be nice to see some new 2 rail products. GP40-2 tops my list. To even offer past products again would be a plus for the consumer. Hope it can happen.

This is what MTH sent out to the general public:

March 17, 2021 - M.T.H. Electric Trains has announced that it has sold a selection of its Premier O Scale molds to Atlas as part of its continued divestiture of tooling assets in light of M.T.H. President Mike Wolf's retirement later this year.

The selection of models includes diesel locomotives, freight cars, and passenger cars from the Premier line. In addition, a number of O Scale accessories from the RailKing lineup are included. Like the January 2021 Scale Trains tooling purchase of M.T.H.'s HO and S Gauge lineups, the Atlas purchase is only for the tools and molds of the selected items.

Since the announcement last Spring that M.T.H. President Mike Wolf would be retiring and closing down M.T.H., Atlas becomes the second model railroading company to purchase some of the vast tooling assets M.T.H. developed over the past 41 years. According to Wolf, "Atlas' longtime presence in the model railroading marketplace makes them a great place for these exciting models to now call home. Their decision to continue producing locomotives with Proto-Sound 3.0 makes Atlas a great destination for M.T.H. fans who've long appreciated the value found in these models."

A few of the models included in the sale were previously promoted under the M.T.H. brand in either uncataloged announcements or the 2020 O Gauge catalogs but have yet to arrive on retailer shelves. Those models will still be produced in M.T.H. branded packaging and will be supported, like all previous M.T.H. releases, by the M.T.H. Authorized Service Center network.

Good news, and I also hope the SW will get put back into the production line in the not-too-distant future. Is it too much to hope that the 44 tonner and the S2 will someday get produced in 2 rail? Only time will tell.

Could be exciting times ahead for all of the transition-era shortline/branchline small loco guys out there. (Like me.) 😀☘️

It will be interesting to see how this all works out. IMO .... MTH had gotten a bit lazy - or just not caring as they began an exit stage left. Atlas always seemed to be willing to upgrade products when the bought them and willing to do roads no one else wanted to do. I always thought Atlas diesels were better detailed - lately just not produced.
Let’s hope Atlas Finally kicks it in gear and starts delivering product. Surely they didn’t buy all this to not produce !!!  I wish them Success and say thanks to stepping up and returning to the O gauge market.  !!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Where things will get interesting is how model dimension differences will be managed/handled. If you place an Atlas and MTH 40’ boxcars next to each other, the MTH is always taller. Probably any rolling stock. Same for diesels.  Theres excessive see thru space under the MTH diesel frame (that I don’t like). I prefer the Atlas management of the dimensions. I Really hope Atlas can begin making modifications to MTH product to have uniform heights.
Perhaps I’m overly fussy. Just laying out my opinion and hopes for upgrades that IMO will create a more uniform product - make this great news even better in the long run !!!!  👍👍👍

Atlas is buying the molds. They can now do anything they want with them including lower bolsters and different trucks which is the main reason why MTH rides higher. When Atlas bought Intermountain they replaced most of the plastic detail with metal to make them more durable.
