I contacted a former forum member who had purchased the scale-wheeled version of the 3463/3464 Hudson MTH did a few years ago and he confirmed that they could negotiate 36" radius (O-72) curves. So I took a leap of faith and bought the scale-wheeled version as part of my move further into 3RS and 2-Rail operation. The locomotive arrived Monday.

As a previous review stated, the unit was beautifully done. I agree. The lines and detail are beautifully done.

This unit features a magnetically-secured coupler door on the pilot. The scale coupler swings out from the conductor's side (the magnet is on the engineer's side.) As with its hi-rail counterpart, a separate hi-rail coupler is included for double-heading, and to my surprise, an electronic hi-rail coupler was included for the tender. Since I'm going to install a Kadee, I won't be using it. It also looks like I can squeeze a modified Kadee into the pilot.

Another nice feature is the deck plate. Unlike my E4 Hudson, this one is rounded to better accommodate the shorter drawbar (which I will purchase soon.)

The tender hatches open, some of which reveal the 2-rail/3-rail selector, smoke, volume, and dcc/dcs selector.

An interesting surprise was the inclusion of curtains on the cab.

In addition to the sliding vent doors on the roof, the cab windows slide. A nice touch.

How does it run/sound. Great! It did indeed negotiate the 36" radius (O-72) hidden curve near the trestle without incident. Surprisingly, it was more forgiving of uneven spots on the layout than my scale-wheeled ES44 diesels.

Summary:

The Good:  Full set of flanges, great sound, sharp detail, works on 2-rail and 3-rail "flat-top" track, can make it around 36" radius curves (not curve-replacement turnouts.)

The Bad: Not friendly to less-than-perfect track work

The Ugly: When using the extended start-up sequence, there's a reference to dumping the ash pit and shoving coal around. Problem is that the unit is Oil-Fired.

Very nice.

Thanks. The sound kinda blew us away. Following ATSF practice, this one will stay clean. I'm looking for passenger cars for it. I want full length streamlined cars. I have a set of heavyweights I could legitimately pull behind it since it also pulled those. The Blue Goose cars are a fantasy scheme (at least from all the data I can find so far,) although they do look good.

Hi Matt ,

Beautiful engine , I always liked it . Unfortunately for me I am addicted to modern diesels.

A side note , soon I will have resin cast , correct Santa Fe fluted passenger cars , and with the ribbed roof . Tinted windows. I have been working on the masters for awhile.

When I get one done I will send you a picture . They are basically for myself .

I do have a 10 car Hi Level with Alco's by Lionel with TMCC 2 railed .

I also have ATSF F units for these cars I am making .So I am A SANTA Fe fan big time , as well as UP and SP

Looking forward to the photos. I still have the photos you sent of the open autorack and one of the first 86-foot excess height box cars you built, plus your grain elevator/milling operation. My plan was to build something similar for all the grain hoppers I have. Great work.

Matt...great video!  Love the layout too!  I have the previous version but the lead trucks look more like the traditional black ones with which we are all familiar.  I wonder how difficult it would be to get a set of the scale trucks like yours??.....probably impossible with the MTH parts situation but I would really like to upgrade to those for sure!!

Thanks,

Alan

Matt,

Thanks for the review, pictures and video.  Very impressive.  I have several questions if you don't mind:

1.  What layout was it running on?

2.  Were you using MTH's "quillable" whistle feature.  My ears couldn't tell if you were or not.

3.  How is the smoke production?

4.  I saw on the 2 rail forum that you had plans to run it on your friend's 2 rail layout.  I would greatly appreciate any comments you you might have on that experience.  Maybe it might be better to have a separate posting for this model running on 2 rail DCC.

Regards,

Steve

Very nice engine, I am jealous. That has to be the greatest whistle I have heard ever on an O gauge engine.

One thing that bothers me is that when you open the hatches on the tender everything is the same blue. It looks a little odd, but that's an easy fix if ya want to paint the insides.

Very nice. Thanks for the video.

Great engine.  I really appreciated the videos.  They gave me a great comparison to my earlier PS2 version.  That whistle is a great improvement.

Matt - I hope you will update us when you are able to check out the PS3, DCC, 2 rail capabilities.  I'm VERY interested.

I'm thinking of using PS3 for future upgrades when it becomes available.  It looks as if it will make more sense than TMCC/RS4) because of the limited number of RS4 sound sets offered.  When it does become available, I will have to upgrade my "Goose".  I think you engine sounds great!
