Question:  I recently purchased an O scale 4-6-4 Royal Hudson MTH Trains #20-3313-1 and am in the process of trying to get an O scale layout up and running.

(I only own one other loco, a very old Lionel 2-6-4  027 scale, so I'm basically starting from scratch. I still have my old Lionel transformer for a power supply.)

I do, however, have a medium size HO layout complete with an NCE Power Pro DCC system.

First, would someone please confirm that the MTH decoder or system in my O scale loco will essentially only work well and perform well with the MTH DCS system ?

I get the impression that the locomotive won't do much with any other controller.

Second, if I remove  the MTH decoder and replace it with a DCC decoder, will I be able to run the locomotive and have a full range of features including sound ?

And is that even possible or practical?

I'm trying to decide if I should try to modify the MTH O scale loco and run the O scale layout with my NCE Power Pro system OR just bite the bullet and buy an MTH 50-1001 DCS controller and have two separate controls - one for my HO layout and one for my O layout.

Any comments and/or suggestions would be very much appreciated.  Thanks.    John.

Not practical to remove the system to install DCC, but it could be done with loss of capability.

Had you bought a newer model with PS-3 it would have been DCS and DCC capable out of the box.

Plus if you buy MTH HO you can ditch your DCC and do everything with one TIU and DCS.  One channel for the O layout and one channel powered by a DC transformer for the HO.  You can run O on DC or AC.

In O there is much more that can be done with a Command layout.  G

Greatly appreciate your taking the time to reply.
Any chance I could telephone you or send an off-line message?

Just have a couple of follow-up questions.
Mostly, you mention MTH-HO  DCS.
Is that a separate or different system from the 50-1001 (DCS Remote Control Set Includes DCS Remote and DCS TIU I would by) or is it the same thing ?
And, if I buy it, will it control the decoders I have in my HO locos or will I need to convert to MTH decoders or something?
