I know someone on this forum has the knowledge to help me. I'm not very "Tech Savvy" I've been running my layout with the Explorer unit for almost a year and half using the MTH Wifi network. I do have a TIU and new WIU that will be used once I obtain all the cables. I hooked my Explorer up to my Router which is upstairs, set the Explorer to Home Network. The WPS Light on the Explorer Blinks, then shuts off and wont connect. But works Fine on the MTH network. Is there a reason it wont connect to my Home Wifi ? Thanks in advance

Sure, dozens of reasons it might not connect. You might have 5GHz home network and this module is only 2.4. Could be limitations of the WPS and compatibility. WPS is just a consumer friendly way of not having to know a password and SSID for proper configuration. It's not ideal, it's not always secure and big surprise, 2 different manufacturers devices may not "auto connect".

Personally, I would have suggested leaving it the way you were running it, standalone MTH network.

You do have to possible push a button on the router or enable WPS on the router as well.

I tried that and Nothing. Not sure if both WPS buttons have to be pushed simultaneously, I cant do that cause the Router is upstairs and the explorer is in the Basement. I did switch it back to the MTH internet setting and its fine that way. Its just not a secure connection. I'm just hoping I dont have the same issue with setting up my TIU and WIU.

There is a time frame in which both must be pushed.  Any chance you can walk the Explorer up near the router and try?

By definition, that is a secure connection. It's a closed network, no internet, just 2 purpose built devices talking to each other over an encrypted network with a passkey. It's actually more secure than using your home router. Nobody has any incentive to hack into it, and even if they did, they go nowhere. At best they annoy you and brick the device.

However, if it's on your home router with internet- now the hacker has a reason. They hack the device, throw their own code on it to jump from your internet connection to commit whatever they actually wanted to do all while tracing back to your network.

The risk of this is extremely low, but I'm just trying to show the example of the false understanding of security. A closed network to nowhere purpose made between 2 devices is as secure as it gets. The next level of security is just flat unplugged and turned off.

Tried that and wouldn't work. Its back on the MTH network so I can run Trains.Hoping I dont have this issue with the TIU & WIU. Thanks Anyway Marty

The DCS explorer and the WIU use the same module, the same LUCI interface. The only major difference is the application code WIU vs Explorer firmware flashed to the device. I know because a repair method for a bricked device was replace the module with one from MTH and then flash the correct firmware for the function.

So yeah, they are going to work the same way. If you cannot setup using WPS button on one, it's unlikely to work on the other.

Okay Thanks, I guess I will have to run the TIU and WIU on the MTH Network

Interesting....I know when I log into the MTH Network I get a Privacy Warning Every time. The only time my FB page was ever hacked was while running Trains. Now I Log off of FB when I'm on MTH's Network
