I had expected to be able to have multiple phones and tablets control locomotives via the same single WIU/TIU on my layout.  However, despite purchasing two separate downloads of the app, when I begin commanding a 2nd locomotive from the 2nd device, I very quickly get connection failures on both phone/tablets.  I have to power down the system and bring things up again.  Meanwhile, the handheld controller continues to work fine, which leads me to conclude the issue is at the WIU.  I am using the "Home" setting, with both devices connected to my home Wifi network to also reach the WIU.

Are others able to successfully control multiple locos with multiple tablets on the current MTH DCS system?  I saw this thread from several years ago that implied folks could, but I haven't seen discussion of actual use.  https://ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/...cs-wifi-app-question

Thanks!

1) The TIU is Rev L (sticker on the bottom), with firmware 6.10 (reported by a query in the DCS app).  The WIU is Wifi DCS 1.0 (sticker on the bottom).   I'm using an iphone as one device, and an ipad as another, both with the app downloaded from the app store (3.2.1).

2) The WIU is set to Home, and is connected via WiFi to my home router.  The WIU, iphone, and tablet are all using the same secured WiFi network.

Have you set your iPhone and iPad to NOT automatically join networks?

Are you connected to your home router 2.4g or 5g?

Have you tried disconnecting from your home WiFi and using the WIU as the connection point?   The iPhone and iPad will connect to the WIU WiFi

FYI.  I am able to use my iPhone 12 Pro and iPad 7th Gen at the same time, using the WIU AdHoc WiFi network

I put them both in Airplane Mode so nothing tried to interfere (calls, etc..)  I turn off automatic updates for all apps, etc..

@EscapeRocks the devices definitely were staying with my home network.  That network has both 2.4g and 5g with the same network name, so I will need to do some monitoring on the router to see which frequency of the network they are on when the issue occurs.

On the plus side, when I switch to the MTH adhoc network, I *can* run both without issue.  That made for a very nice experience!  (although not desirable long term, to have to keep switching the devices to/from networks).

I will explore further.  Thanks folks.

What's the chance your WIU and Home WiFi router are located in close proximity of each other? Perhaps close enough you can run a nice piece of CAT5e cable and wire your WIU directly to your Home router without an unsightly cable strung throughout the house?

If you can, then you can leave the WIU in MTH mode, the WIU will communicate with your home wireless network (via the wired connection) and you never have to worry about joining a different network to run your trains vs. using the internet.

@H1000, That's also a good tip, thank you.  Both are in the basement albeit in different rooms... it could be done.  I will plan on it if the frequency idea doesn't work out - running the wired connection would be preferable to switching networks whenever I have some minutes to play.

Even for simple troubleshooting, you could set this up temporarily. you'll eliminate the wireless connection variable between the router and WIU. Newer AX wireless routers may need to be set to "Legacy" mode to support some older G & N wireless devices.

Question for you

how did you add multiple remote’s? Do you have to buy the upgrade for each remote? I want to add my I Pad to the system.

is there a way to program one then air drop it to another remote?

I want to run two WIU’s with two remotes. It takes a lot of time to add all this information into the remote.

two remotes? or do you mean 2 devices?

MTH DCS WIFI Premium Purchase for multiple devices | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum (ogaugerr.com)

You buy either the IOS or the Android version once only. You may get asked to buy it again on another device, but you won't get charged on the same account.
