I have tried putting steam engine tender on track and steam engine on the track get a bright flashlight and lay on its ide so it shines on the connectors your trying to connect (draw bar) then lift the draw bar with you fingers while aligning it up then grab the top and bottom of the draw bar and squeeze the two pieces together with your fingers until you hear or feel the click or snap as they lock in to each other, that seem to work the best for me if you don't want to lay the engine and tender on its side! you need a bright flashlight so you can see it align as best you can. I always put it on the track outer edge of your platform so you plenty of room  to see this clearly. try it and let us know how you made out!

Mike is correct, even if you do not like it.  Lay the locomotive and tender on their sides, on a towel, and gently push the drawbar into the slot with your thumb until you hear the click.  Then place the locomotive on the track.  If you damage the connector plug, misalign one of the six wires, you can cause a direct short that will cause much damage to the tether, drawbar and boards.
