there is something that I do not understand about the MTH HO locomotives. They run on DCC and have 3.0 proto-sound on board.
Does this mean that they can also run on a DCS system or only DCC??

Yes, MTH HO locomotives with ProtoSound 3 run on either MTHs DCS system or anY NMRA DCC system

Yes but wait until you hear back from one of these more experienced users about setting the voltage on the Z4000 as it is capable of 22v output. I have only run my HO locomotives on a HO club layout which is probably 12v or 18v.
and the first released MTH HO engines were DC only I believe? (or I should state not straight AC?)
With some of the MTH DCS/DCC engines, check the instructions and the model to see if it has a DCS/DCC switch. Running the engine on the wrong system will fry the electronics (DCC on DCS or DCS on DCC).

Hmmm. I'm not sure about that? I have done it by accident (having switch on DCC on my DCS layout). I must admit I killed the power right away when I heard it buzzing. No harm though.
I would not use AC voltage to power my PS3 HO locomotives. I have quite a few and I always use DC when running with DCS. As far as I can remember only the PS3E+ boards like AC voltage

If you are using DCS to run any PS 3.0 engine, you can use AC or DC power. If you are using DCC to run any PS 3.0 engine it must be DC power only.
