Does MTH make a starter set in HO with a P3 engine track and transformer, like they do in O gauge? I’d be more inclined to dabble in HO if I could buy a starter set from them...

MTH made some HO starter sets. You can go to their website, look for the RTR catalog(s), review and go from there.

Understand that there were (are) two versions of each set. The loco either has Proto3 or it is labeled DCC Ready. Like the other O gauge PS3 engines the HO PS3 engines have digital control and sounds. However, the HO DCC Ready engines run conventionally and have no sounds. You can add a sound chip and make it DCC but this off sets the lower cost.
I bring this to your attention because many people are confused about the difference.
